RootAnn
It is my understanding that Landry uses Spectrum Chemistry for their high school chemistry class. I thought they used to use the Spectrum lab components & ship them as part of the cost of the class -- thus making taking Spectrum through them much cheaper (if you have cheap generic credits) than buying the lab stuff from Beginnings Publishing directly. Does anyone have a kid who is taking Landry's Chemistry class this year or last year who can confirm this? I heard a rumor that they've changed the lab component recently. Anyone? chiguirre
I don't know if it's recent, but they buy Home Science Tool's Classic Chemistry Kit: http://www.hometrainingtools.com/classic-chemistry-kit They've also done some online labs. I think they try to do similar experiments to the original Spectrum ones while reducing the number because they just don't have time. The kit they send isn't chintzy and the labs do illustrate what they're studying. It's better than the labs I did in regular high school chemistry back in the Jurassic. I never wrote a formal lab report and most of the labs Landry does require one.
RootAnn
Do you find that your daughter has trouble understanding the concepts in the (thin) Spectrum book & has to go elsewhere to get them or are they covered well in class? How much time do the labs take each week? (Spectrum labs are rumored to take 2-3 hours each.) Do you mind sharing which teacher she has & what she thinks of the class so far? chiguirre
Do you find that your daughter has trouble understanding the concepts in the (thin) Spectrum book & has to go elsewhere to get them or are they covered well in class? She took PreChem so she had some exposure to the concepts before. The teacher also posts extra videos to help struggling students. I bought the parent guide based on recommendations I read before the class and that allows me to check her work and make sure she understands the assignments. So far, we haven't had any problems. How much time do the labs take each week? (Spectrum labs are rumored to take 2-3 hours each.) The labs can take a while is you have to wait for a reaction. The longest was 2 days. The reports take about 2 to 3 hours to research and write because you need to explain the results in context and explore applications or further questions to score more than 90. When there is a lab, there is also usually a chapter assignment. On off weeks, there are usually more chapters assigned. Do you mind sharing which teacher she has & what she thinks of the class so far? She's had Mr. Leingang for PreChem and Chemistry. Science isn't her favorite subject and Chemistry isn't her favorite science, but she thinks the class is okay. That's a pretty good review coming from Trinqueta.
