Is graduate school the same as college?

Sure. I'm out, so I answered no. She didn't want to do this project at all. I don't think she put the thought into it that she should have! The last one she had to do, she only had five people respond and it made her hesitant to do it again. So, I volunteered the board! Yay Boardies!!!

El and others who attempted the Japanese, if it confused you it is because it is in some kind of formal Japanese. Dd told me what it was called. Of course, that name was just sounds to me.  I had no idea that the Japanese language actually was multiple languages depending on  the circumstance you are in. I guess if you grow up with it, it might be second nature, but...

Dd thanks you all...again. She was so tickled last night when she checked to find that she had over a hundred responses. She is mighty impressed with "the board"!!!

I did the same years ago when my DD needed to do a poll. So glad that I can pass it forward now. I completed the questions and had DD19 do that same.  If your DD is interested in younger respondents, I'll have DD15 complete it later.

Everyone is welcomed. All ages/all genders. In fact, the more variety the better! So, grab your kids, cousins, and grandpa!

It's not multiple languages but multiple types of writing.  This is normal for anything written in Japanese.  Kids learn the two syllablic writings (hiragana and katakana) in kindergarten and first grade and start adding in the kanji in first grade.  The kanji gets harder as you progress in school.  The problem is that foreign learners haven't gone through that progression.  So for foreign survey takers, writing it all in hiragana and katakana would be easier.  But Japanese survey takers would have found that weird and cumbersome.  Also our computers and keyboards are set up for writing English too.  So responses were easier in English for me.  (My Japanese friends have things set up for writing in Japanese).

It is a formal speech called Keigo used when you are speaking to a customer or someone who is socially above you. For example, instead of "desu" you say "degozaimasu".

I can't answer for others (esp. since I am fluent in Japanese and learned it from the time I was a baby) but I can't imagine anyone learning Japanese without learning keigo since that is what you would use in any business transaction etc.

And there is the thing. People who speak it as a native, don't think about it. People who learn it as a second language/adults are not taught this form until they are way, way in. She is in the last Japanese classes offered in college, and it is a "business" Japanese class. Actually, it was completely skipped in her normal classes. She is taking a special class with this designation in order to learn it. She feels like she is learning yet another language (sort of) since there are different words for the words she has already learned. Not an efficient way to go about it maybe! She had her first trip over last year and was dismayed to find that most of the conversations she needed to be able to hold she could not because the people she was speaking to were waiters or sales clerks who would only speak keigo to her. She did find a few people who were willing to speak the Japanese that she has learned. She is going back this spring (for a concert!!! I am in shock at that one), hopefully she will have a better grasp of this language this time around. Also, she would love it if you noticed any mistakes that she made. She is definitely still a novice speaker/writer.

And, she has closed it out. Thank you to all who participated for her !!!
