DomesticDiva
Hello to everyone, My 9 yo ds can do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in his head. Many times these are 3 and 4 digit problems. He plays around with numbers all the time. Although, not as much lately as before. I've been using Shiller Math with him. I like the way it introduces concepts by way of manipulatives, songs, movement, etc. Some of these concepts aren't encountered until much later in other programs. But outside of these the rest of the program is slow. I know I'm supposed to do pretest and only go over the problems that my ds doesn't already know. But, sometimes I feel the need to do some of the others that he does know because he tends to rely on mental math and his brain seems to stall when he sees things on paper. So, I try to do the problems so that he can understand the concepts on paper. But, at the same time they are so simple and I can see where he's not being challenged outside of translating them to symbols on paper. I don't want him to lose his love of math because of boredom. Yet, I know his conceptual understanding is far ahead of what I'm doing with Shiller. I suspect that if I could find the way his brain is working that he is probably capable of doing more difficult concepts than I think. By the way, he enjoys Shiller but he is not being challenged. Is this a visual-spatial thing? I've thought about Horizons since I've read that it progresses quickly but reviews regularly but not too much. Also, I've tried Professor B Math and Singapore with him before. He would understand the concepts while we were going through them. But, put a similar problem in front of him, sometimes slightly different sometimes not, and he wouldn't know what to do. But, he'd walk around mentally figuring out how many seconds were in 5 hours, how much change we should get back while purchasing something, etc., and get it right. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. CW
RJH
Last year we used Miquon, and I didn't care for that too much.....not enough explanation for this math challenged mom. This year we switched to Teaching Textbooks, and we love it. I love because it teaches in a fun, easy to understand way. And DS just thinks it's fun. :001_smile:
