Accountability Nov22-Nov 28

Recommended Posts

It's Thanksgiving week for us in the US----- (Any holidays for anyone else?)

We made it through our qualifier. I'm proud to say that the kids took 1(out of 20) on the robot game portion. We were also a candidate for the presentation award. We however did not advance. There are 3 main aspects of judging- core values, robot design, and project/presentation and then the robot game. I just couldn't be more proud of how well they did, last year I was disappointed because I didn't think they shone as well they could have but that was not the case this year. We just didn't adequately prepare for all portions of the competition and were a bit lop-sided in our skills. The kids were so happy and proud of themselves and I was too. We ended up with a perfect run- perfect for us- in that on our last run we completed every mission that we had programmed successfully. They also gave their best presentation performance to date. Our practice and preparation definitely paid off and I'm thrilled we are ended the year on a high note. We are now planning a reward for the kids. I was a ball of stress but not quite as bad as last year by the time we finished running the robot it melted away though as I knew that no matter the outcomes of the awards they had gave it their all.

Now I can exhale........awwwwwwww

This week is one that we are going to relax and enjoy! Monday afternoon is of course dance/TKD and scouts- only one more week before our dance performance. Tuesday dd3 has her dr's physical for her dental work, I think we'll make a day of it and hit library story time and lunch with daddy, like the good ol' days when ds was still young enough for story time. Dd2 doesn't have dance this week due to Thanksgiving but dd1's tumbling class is being moved to Wednesday evening. Thursday we will make the rounds to my parents and the in-laws. I can't wait until the weekend, 4 days off for dh with no big obligations, it will be glorious :)

Today: going to church and then heading to the in-laws to pick up the girls, chilling at home!

I'm so stoked that we cleaned the other day and did all the laundry!!! I hope to make something new for dinner and start figuring out what to cook for Thanksgiving. I will be making my own turkey, dh gets them for free from work anyway so I need to use one, we'll just keep it here for us- leftovers all week! I think I'll try out brining it. I've been warned that the girls are bringing back oodles of Christmas decorations from my mom's house so I bet we will be decorating too.

I'm off to the aquarium this morning. The boys' birthday is on Thanksgiving day. When I asked them what they wanted, they said that they preferred to go do something, so we decided to go visit the sharks, rays and jellyfish for fun. I hope to pet another shark.

I hit 50,000 on my novel last night, but have not validated since I need to play with the compile process before I copy and paste over to NaNo. But I'm very proud of myself, and hope to add another 20,000 words before the end of November. I've got some cleaning and cooking to do this week, but we have no school, so I am looking forward to planning history, writing my hands off, listening to plenty of epic music for inspiration and visiting on and off with family.

Yay!  So glad robotics went so well :)  I'm also glad to hear that you've got a break planned this week, you need it!  Nothing here for us.  We took a week off in October for Thanksgiving in Canada (we went out of town) plus we schooled a little light last week since we had company for three days.  Today is both my mom's and my nephew's birthdays though, so I need to remember to phone them!

Full day for us, with a semi-re arranged schedule.  New routine mostly, but same old materials for now since dd9's new math hasn't arrived yet, nor will she start her online tutoring program for another week or two.  See how it goes . . .

Critter, you posted while I was typing.  50,000 words is amazing, congrats.  Have fun today at the aquarium!  My kids desperately want to go but it's a good seven hour drive from our current home (as opposed to three and a half from my hometown).

For some reason I can't like your post, Tawlas, so consider it liked! :001_smile:  We are back from the aquarium, and I got to pet my favorite sharks, so it was a good day. I also wrote most of the way coming and going, longhand. So that was good too. DH has a fire going, we are going to eat what was left of our sack lunches for dinner, and I think I'm caught up on most of the chores for now.

No school today. However we do still have a schedule for the day. Goes something like this:

Chores and take care of the varmints

Pet the old cat

Pet the boy cats

Pet the kitten

Drink too many cups of hot tea

Listen to epic music until people are screaming at me to play another song already

Write

Intermission to take care of housekeeping and feed people or pets

Audio books this week on American history, Reading and Math lessons daily since we are behind. I am cooking the Turkey on Wednesday and keeping it simple.  We were so blessed to end up with 2 free turkeys and a lot of canned foods ( One from dh's work and one from a church our children visit!) I already bought a turkey so we have 3!  I am thawing 2 out and giving one to a dear friend.

We take off days the ps does since we have 3 dc in ps.  It frustrates me at times but it is not worth the battle.

I need to work on the planners and record book today and find my keys!!

Today was the only day of tumbling, and the gymnastics gym is closed until Monday, so I'm probably going to be sending DD outside to play a lot this week. Still plugging away with schoolwork until Wednesday, at least. This is the first year we aren't having guests for Thanksgiving, and I feel so much more relaxed. Every other year required frantic preparation and cleaning and nobody here wanted to do it this year. Plus, last year, a lot of the people that said they'd be here (including MIL) decided not to show with less than a day's notice. We're not going through that again. This means we'll probably be hosting Christmas, but I'd rather do that. I like the decorations better anyway.

DD's first tumbling meet of the season is Saturday, and she's all excited about seeing her friends from the other gyms again. They haven't seen each other since May.

Thank you! We had a good time, although it is strange to be done after putting in so much work and time.

Aurelia- good luck to your daughter on her upcoming meet.

We decorated the Christmas tree yesterday, watched a Christmas movie and did various other things. Today is a dr. appt for dd3, blood draw for me and library story time.

I have to take kitten to the clinic this morning. She started throwing up yesterday and ran a fever. The fever is better this morning, but she's still throwing up and feels bad, so I need to get some blood, maybe some urine and go take a radiograph just in case it's more than getting into the old cat's food Sunday night before I could stop her. The old cat picks at her food for about half a day usually, and then leaves the rest. Normally I pick it up and change it for fresh, but we were gone all day Sunday and when the kitten was released from her room she headed right for it...

So she may just be a victim of gluttony, but she does feel puny!

Anyway, that's my morning. We'll see what happens after that.

I was thinking of enrolling ds18 in dual enrollment partway through the year.  But being on Fibro time, I didn't get to checking things out with the community college soon enough and the deadline has passed for Winter quarter.  Spring quarter registrations start in January but ds pointed out that him enrolling for just one quarter will not exactly allow him to get a whole year's course done esp. when most of those courses start in the fall.  So we'll just finish up high school at home. All he has to finish is a history / lit. class.  I put off starting it until now because physics was such a big pain to drag him through.  He finds history/lit. easy so we should be fine.  I have the lit. part pretty well worked out but I need to do research on the high school board for the history part.

We were supposed to do school yesterday, but I had a major schedule fail.  DH and I had an appointment, GS had a Thanksgiving program and party.  DD did all three of her sports yesterday.  We were literally out of the house for 12 hours, except the 30 minutes we came back to change into riding gear and pick up DH for the afternoon logistics.  I was exhausted.

So, DH took DD to swimming this morning while I slept in.  We'll get started in a few minutes....and we'll probably only hit the must haves.  Tomorrow is our first round of psych testing....so we'll have to see how she is after all that.

I have to cook Thanksgiving Dinner and I love the Cranberry sauce  so I have to make a trip to the store for Cranberries, oranges and I have raw sugar.

I have to buy a pecan pie too... I don't have energy or time to make one.

Lazer Tag tomorrow night so that is incentive for doing the three R's today... I hope.

I am so sleep deprived it is hard to remember so I need to write notes again ( reminders)

I will go to the Boxes of books and drag out all of the Thanksgiving books to peruse the rest of the week.

Sticking to tradition, I will not even get out Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving! It may even be next week!

Critterfixer--I hope your kitty is alright.

Sdel- praying you get answers from your evals.

TG- hoping you get some sleep.

I wasn't around much this weekend because I was so sick I could hardly move, everything hurt especially my head. I was able to get Ds to his music lesson yesterday before literally passing out for the rest of the afternoon. Feeling much better today, but now I'm in the throes of packing for our trip to visit family for the Thanksgiving holiday. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and for those who go out on Black Friday, please be safe and come back and post your deals, lol.

Thanks....I'm really hoping to get a good idea as to why she just fights school so much outside of "I'm bored".  Even when things we are doing are her idea she fights doing it and says she's bored.

Today has been good...and considering the holidays, I may call it a day.  We did math okay.  Got a bit of resistance at the end....but the desire of chocolate chips prevailed.  She did really well during the "handholding" portion of math, but started resisting when I started making her do it a bit more independently.  I'll have to chew on that some....because I really feel like she needs to be able to do a few problems independently to really have mastery.  I know she knows the concept, I'm just not really sure where she stands on fluency.  I know if I spend too much more time on it, she'll start resisting because "she knows it" and "is bored".

Then we did history and she didn't put up much fuss.  We also had a drawing lesson.  We did a contour drawing of a left over pumpkin from Halloween.  She raced through it so fast I had her do a second pumpkin.  It wasn't bad either.   Break time now, until dad comes back with lunch, and then I'll decide if we are going to do more.  She didn't want to break, but I had her help me feed the rabbits and rework the cages.  Then released her to go jump on the trampoline.  After we do lunch I'll see about something for science.

Stefanie- I do hope you get some answers- I'm feeling optimistic that it is really going to change things for the better, although it might take a bit.

mama25- sorry to hear you were sick :(

Jean- on the plus side your son is so close to being done, done- done, that has to be an incredible feeling!

critter- sending get well soon vibes to kitty :(

Yesterday we did an appointment for dd, who happens to have pink eye- although that isn't why we went. By night time both dh and dd2 eyes were effected as well. We also made it to story time and had lunch with dh- it was a nice day.

Today- I will be sleeping in since I'm up at in the night- I'm assuming it is the time of the month for my hormones to screw up my sleep. Then we will get on with:

-cleaning house- must have everything done before bed so we can get started with cooking straight away Thanksgiving day

-any meal prep

-fold clothes- as I've had some extra time I've been having us do laundry as we go instead of all at once- there is currently a load in the dryer to be folded

-finish cleaning out van- the kids unloaded everything- now onto vacuuming and scrubbing

-take a walk- hope I go back to sleep and feel up to it

Sdel, I'm interested in to hear of your dd's psych eval.  I have similar problems with dsd9.  We're pretty darn sure she has dyslexia, but that's only been unofficially evaluated.  I know that affects many areas of her life.  And after reading the book Mindset, I could see how her mindset is affecting her cooperation in one-on-one lessons.  That, combined with a poor self-esteem, makes for some pretty tough days.  She's been with our family for two years and I can see improvement, but we still have some tough days.  My answer, for now, is to limit how much face-to-face stuff we do.  I'm easing her into MUS for multi-digit multiplication and all of division (but keeping some Math Mammoth chapters cause I like the program so much).  I'm also going to set her up with some skype reading tutoring for 6-12 weeks (depending on daily time we can schedule) just to give us both a break from each other.    I'm going to save "emotional growth" for spelling, writing and dictations lol.  That'll be plenty of growth each day lol! Oh, and I'm trying to the Brainology program (made for for middle schoolers based on the info in the book Mindset).  I hope that it's not too advanced for her. . .

Haha.  All that to say, I'm considering an educational psychologist to help pinpoint what is dyslexia genuinely making things hard for her and what is her own interpretation or mindset that is making things hard for her.  At least then I might be able to help her out more effectively.

Critter, I hope your kitty is okay!  Man, I thought a kitten would be healthy for longer :(

Mama25, hope you get a chance to really rest up while visiting family.  Being a mom and sick at the same time is just no fun.

Soror, plan sounds solid, hope it works out!

As for me, a slow day.  Both boys went to town with dh for a firehall tour, since neither of them have been before.  Poor neglected homeschoolers :P  Most kids around here go in both preschool and kindergarten lol.  So dd9 and I have already finished math and reading, she read to the toddler and now she's watching Times Tales.  May tackle a dictation this afternoon while the toddler is "napping" (or whatever it is she thinks she does in her room during naptime) and then maybe bake muffins.  We were supposed to try baking muffins with and without baking powder today for science.  Maybe the boys will be back by then?  So now I'm puttering a little.  it's cold outside (-15 C) so I'm also keeping the fire going well :)

Have a great day everyone !

Thanks everyone for the well wishes on the testing.  I hope it tells me something.  We spent an hour and a half testing this morning.  Afterward she was a total pill, we even left the Cheesecake Factory without cheesecake because she just couldn't behave during lunch.  The two year old was less wiggly than her.  I'm pretty confident she's ADHD, emphasis on the H, with a strong possibility she may be very slightly on the ASD spectrum (several cousins are ASD).  My gut also screams that most of her issues are sensory.  That is next to be checked.  I think I'm going to go pay out of pocket for an eval because I already know my insurance won't pay for sensory and I feel like that the last eval I did was blown off because of it.  I do not feel like her issues are dyslexia.  The only real dyslexia symptoms I see are the ones that overlap the ADHD; not the reversals (hers are most definitely games), sequencing issues, memorization issues, etc.  The only other thing that stands out to me is that she has always come across to me as mentally tired all the time.

So far the only comment I've gotten is an acknowledgement that she's really smart.

Today was DD's second day without any form of gymnastics and she just couldn't take it. She spent 2 hours in the living room practicing her front handsprings, round-offs and cartwheels, between school lessons and before dinner. She kept asking me for more exercises to do, like oversplits, and running circles around the living room, burpees and other things. And she was HAPPY about it. I would have been horrified and done anything to get out of that as a child. I'm glad she's finally grown into knowing when she needs get her wiggles out, get some exercise and come back to finish her work (with improved focus) during school time. I was seriously starting to think that would never happen. She has mild ADHD, and she needs hard daily exercise to be able to focus. I tend to forget how much she needs it until she's not getting enough and ends up wound even tighter than what I'm used to, and her attitude takes a nosedive, too.

Yesterday was conquered, house cleaned, swept and mopped, laundry done and meal prep. I'm grilling a bbq spiced dry-brined turkey(dh pieced it with his butchering knife) so I had to put the brine on last night. Dd1 also made her gf vanilla cake. This am I have the turkey coming to room temp and it will go on the grill at 9. Eggs are boiled for deviled eggs and I'm getting ready to cook the apple crisp and then make the deviled eggs. I'll make the roasted potatoes and brussel sprouts and then the salad last.

I hope everyone has a good day today. Kitty is still having problems, so I'll be spending Thanksgiving tending to her medication schedule. Sigh. She's feeling a little better today, but she needs to be eating before I'll breath easy.

Other than that, I suspect I'll just try to keep the day as relaxed as I can. I'm short on sleep, short on emotional control and about the only thing that sounds good right now is mashed potatoes and a nap. It's been that kind of a week. Some week off.

And it's the boys' birthday. I've pretty much said that until the kitten is well school is off. There's just too much to do right now trying to get her healthy again for me to concentrate on much of anything else.

ETA: Update-the kitten has begun to nibble at her food. This is a very good sign that her little gut is improving, but given how mad her little gut looked yesterday, she still has a ways to go. Still, a good sign.

Oh brother you guys.  I was hoping for a better week off for you all.  Critter, I liked your post ONLY because the kitty seems to be doing slightly better  - the rest stinks.  I'm sorry.  Stefanie, did you have big dinner plans  today?  Get better soon!  Aurelia, my mom had a long straight lineof masking that ran through our family room so I could practice cartwheels, round offs, walkovers, whatever in a straight line lol.  I was all over the place without it!

AFM, I can take American and Canadian Thanksgiving weeks off, right?  Well, really, I'm only taking today off to help dh sort cows for the sale.  Only problem is it's -18 degrees out there!  Jeez.  And tomorrow, I'm heading off to the small city nearby for a major Costco trip.  Long overdue for this large® family.  Well, off to layer up and take in some food before heading outside at daylight.  Wish us luck!

Update:  Left the kids with what I thought was a do-able list and they got it all done!  Yahoo.  Some math, printing, fact practice, history documentary and reading all got done.  They even helped each other with tricky parts and made lunch on their own.  I'm very impressed (and glad that there was a third adult in the house who works from home in her office to "keep an ear on things" lol).  So nice to know that is a possibility now - as long as I choose the work carefully.

Update: Kitten is 72 hours out from her surgery on Wednesday. She is still eating, and eating well. Still on a lot of medications and I'm up with her at night doing her treatments, but she's feeling like she can do more than she should be doing. She wore herself out today, and now she's sleeping next to me on the bed. Still a way to go, but seems to be mending at this point.
