writing prompts in schoolroom area?

I am in the process of setting up our deskwork area for this summer and noticed that my ds's KG classroom has a work wall and various lists (like days of the week, month names, etc) around the classroom to help them when they have journal writing time. I know the teacher askes the students to look around the room for help spelling words or getting ideas of what to write about and at this stage doesn't correct spelling. He already knows how to read and spell sight words upto second grade and usually when we do writing at home I ask him to sound it out and help him with the correct spelling. I know one of my goals next year hsing, is to have him be a better writer. So far we're doing spelling power, but I was wondering if I ask him to do independent writing, should I keep the room with either a word wall at second grade level or have those posters of trigger words up? We are fortunate that I can devote an entire extra room for this in addition to his bedroom and finished basement (which now is the play room). Any advice on the matter? I don't want him to feel stuck or frustrated about writing, and if these simple promts usually help, then why not have them up.

I've read about something like this done in a Word Dictionary type thing. Any words you come across that are misspelled in his writing or you think he asks how to spell can go in it.

Would something along those lines work for you?

I started something like this for dd. Often I will just even write a word bank on her paper when she is writing. Lately I've been encouraging her to sound it out and I work with her on how to spell the words that way.

We have lots of print around our schoolroom. When dd was in K, we hung up lots of labels on things. You can see our schoolroom pictures on my blog. Look under January, then schoolroom.

I like to make a word wall, but we just haven't this year. We did have a sight word box in first grade and in K. I just wrote out some notecards (3X5, I think) with words like "the" and the numbers and colors, as well as words I knew dd would encounter in the Pathway readers. I never worried about her writing, tho, because I just let her write phonetically and also helped her spell words. She didn't do a heck of a lot of writing, anyway--lots of copywork and such instead.

are the mini offices made by taping two file folders together?

I had that question, too, so I searched for pictures online - I saw them in all sorts of shapes & sizes! LOL. I taped two file folders together and tried to make it as long as possible. But I also saw one online that was *just* 1 file folder. I've also seen several using the typical Lapbook type folds (both sides folded to the middle, or two taped together, some with flaps, etc.) So, whatever works! I'm going to try making another one, but I'll try using just one folder and try condensing my info a bit (I want it to be easy for my dd to find words quickly).
