ID/OEC, if you used a secular Biology text, what was your approach?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Currently, I am leaning toward using a secular text for Biology.  I agree for the most part with Reason's to Believe in their recommendation to go secular.  The majority of Christian publishers seem to have a strong YEC bent which I do not like.  I would like to give fair treatment to evolution as well as OEC, YEC, and ID.  No small task, I know.  I want to supplement in order to address these other areas as well.

I am wondering, what, if anything, you used to present these other perspectives on creation, age of the earth, ID, etc..?

So far, I have purchased The Intelligent Design Collection which the kids have really enjoyed.  I also have a couple of books by Hugh Ross:

More than a Theory

Why the Universe is the way it is

Any other ideas appreciated.

Thanks,

I put together a science and the Bible study for my son using some of the resources you listed as well as some others.  You can see it here:  http://eclectic-homeschool.com/science-and-the-bible/ Perhaps it will be helpful.

Thanks, Embassy.  I really like those books, especially the first one.   Are you doing this as a precursor to Biology or at the same time?

I used Miller/Levine Biology for both my kids. Since I am an OEC, there is really no way that I could comfortably use a Christian Biology program. There is just too much left out. One of my kids did use DIVE with Miller/Levine, but it was really just for the steady walk-through and lectures, not because I wanted a Christian perspective.

My teen age kids already knew our Christian beliefs. There was nothing there to teach. I wanted to teach them Biology and currently accepted scientific theories.

My son did it a year before starting Miller-Levine Biology. I had planned to do it at the same time though. We were finishing up another science curriculum first and that ended up taking longer than expected.

We will be using Discovering ID next year for science and supplementing with other resources.  I have also just recently heard about a new book Hugh Ross wrote called, Hidden Treasures in the Book of Job: How the Oldest Book in the Bible Answers Today's Scientific Questions.  I watched a YT video where Hugh Ross explains some aspects of Job, the book, and what it offers.  I'm very excited about getting it when I get some Christmas money.
