Spelling bee

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I got a note from school today that my son has cleared the class level spelling bee and is qualified to enter the campus level. He has one month to prepare. They have sent a list of words. What else can I use to prepare him in this one month effectively?

Thanks,

Nan

Was it the school spelling list? He needs to know every word on that list cold. Those will be the words used at the school spelling bee. He may also encounter "championship" words if it comes down to 2 or 3 really good kids at the end. There is no way to really prepare for those quickly. You can study the regional lists and the words used at the National Bee from year to year or you can do a serious study of Latin and Greek roots, but those harder, out-of-left field words aren't really something you can prepare for quickly.

You can also go online to the Scripps Spelling Bee site and register for an account. Once you are registered, you can print out additional copies of the school spelling list as well as copies of the regional spelling bee lists. There are also spelling and vocabulary activities on the website you can do to practice the words, but I think you have to pay a small fee to be able to do that.

@MinivanMom - Thank you so much. Really appreciate your quick response. I will look into the Scripps spelling bee site today.

On a side note - I wish this forum had a way to show our appreciation in some way for the person who responds to our queries and is helpful.  Thanks once again from the bottom of my heart.

-Nan.
