Thanks, Faith. :) If you want, you can add Honors to my dd's - I forgot and added it later. Also, I have two senior dds, but maybe it's not important to differentiate them? I can't believe that we are already to this season. Wasn't it just yesterday that my ds was a little kid, playing legos and learning to read and to count. I remember worrying, because a friend had her kid in a day care and she already knew her colors. At the same time, it seems like it has been looming for ages. I told my DS my one and done story because I didn't want to pay the application for more schools if I didn't have to and my parents weren't going to pay it for me. I think DS has taken it to heart and tried to follow my example. However, much has changed since I went to college and financially I think the one and done would be a very poor approach but DS isn't being very cooperative on the matter. Just want to say that we all thought closer to home would be better for youngest and he chose his school based, in part, on that. We were right. He,s a junior now. We are all really glad he,s closer rather than farther. He,d probably have transferred by now if he weren,t. It is better this way for some. : ) Congrats! My daughter got her first selective college admission (and it appears she has a potential WTM classmate...congrats Muttichen!): Princeton She's had several other admissions, and I listed some of the ones still in contention below. Princeton is a flattering admission, though in the end it will come down to money and fit. She has one of those ridiculously long lists of potential schools, in part because of the need for good aid, but also because we live in a geographically isolated area and it was difficult to fit visits in before college app season began. She was not entirely sure what she was looking for...and still isn't. For what it's worth, though Princeton does not offer merit aid, the need-based package they are offering makes it very competitive with many of the other schools. She's applied for competitive scholarships at other places, and we will see how that turns out. She also would like to go to school near mountains...hmmm, can the need for money and mountains come together. The website is now defunct and the articles are no longer online. I've been meaning to put them together into an e-book and put it on Amazon. I remember being very impressed by Muttichen's post in this thread: We purposely sought out competitions because we feel that putting together a project is extremely beneficial to the kids and if they win, it helps them to stand out as exceptional when they are applying to college. We aim for our kids to have at least one national level award in addition to NMF and National AP Scholar. So far, they've been quite successful! Dd24 was a finalist in an essay contest sponsored by the National Council of Humanities (one of four nationally), Ds22 was fourth in his category at ISEF (they give lots of prizes, so that's not as impressive as it sounds) and was an Intel Science Talent Search semifinalist. He was also a three-time USAMO qualifier. Dd21 was a Young Epidemiology Scholars finalist and 7th nationally at National History Day. Ds19 was second in computer science at ISEF as a junior and second in biochem as a senior. He was also third nationally in the Siemens Competition. Teacher Mom Posted December 19, 2015 Share Posted December 19, 2015 Can I just say, "Wow, this is so very awesome!" to all you homeschooling ladies and gents (and to your kids too). I am so thankful for everyone's happiness and joy in each other's accomplishments. I wish I lived near all you great people--- just makes my eyes water at the joy ya'll express for each other. These accepted young adults are very blessed indeed if they mature into the caring people their parents are.
