Thank you! I was hoping you'd chime in, because I tried pm-ing you and it didn't go through. I also found this link but I know for a fact a few of those are above DS's current level.

You could check the grade level on the Wikipedia French education page and then search Amazon.ca or .fr for that level...

Otherwise there are the Francais facile books by CLE...For example it shows on the left side of the cover the number of words...

Can you see '600 mots' on the left side of Cinq semaines en ballon?

Here's the results of a search I just did for that series.

Sometimes it is possible to get a recording with the easy readers, perhaps on the website of CLE...It seems like I looked for them once.

The link you posted

" I also found this link but I know for a fact a few of those are above DS's current level.

http://libguides.eco...941&sid=4820808"

says it's for 6e and 5e which if you look on the French education page is actually about 6th and 7th grade. So you're right about the reading level...You said you want 3 - 4th grade which is about the level that loesje posted for her book CE2 or 4th grade CM1...

You can look for books by age on the FNAC site or on amazon.fr.  At that level my son was a big fan of books by J-P Arrou-Vignod, Daniel Pennac (in addition to Gripari, of course). Gallimard has "Folio Junior" which is specifically from 9 years old, so you might take a look at those titles.  Most other publishers will have titles grouped by age as well.  Nathan has Contes et Legendes which is easy reading for that age.  And a liste from Nathan of books by grade level: http://www.nathan.fr/ressources-pedagogiques-jeunesse/ressources-pedagogiques/selection-ce2.asp?ordre=date_parution

You could also search by grade level. This list, for example, came up when I searched for books for CE2.

You could also try browsing LesPetitsLivres.com - an online French library; the books are categorized by age.  Anne-Marie was very pleasant in her emails so I'm sure you could email her and ask if necessary.

You can look at the eduscol website for the recommended reading list for grade 3/4, which would be cycle 3. They are listed by type, and you can see that there are quite a few translated works.

I like monecole because I get a little bit more info on each book, which saves me time and helps me choose, and you can search by type of book also.
