Let's Talk Fall! What do you LOVE to do in Autumn?

One thing I've never done before that I plan on doing is taking a trip to a nearby cidery. Yummy!

I learned a new word. :)

Doing leaf rubbings and wax art with the kids. Making popcorn balls and caramel apples. Watching the leaves turn colors my boys make leaf piles and jump in them. Setting up the bird feeder. Starting school!

ETA: Because we live in higher elevation, our fall comes early. We had our leaves start changing colors weeks ago. Fall def. isn't in full swing yet though!

Lots of nature walks! And actually enjoying the outdoors. I hate it when it's hot.

I love picking apples and pumpkins...bonus points if it's actually a chilly day when we do those things. Apples taste better right off the tree for some reason. :)

Baking things, especially pumpkin and apple bread. And making butterscotch haystacks.

Burning a great, fall-scented candle, and feeling cozy and happy in our house.

Fall is my favorite time of year.  Unfortunately, I don't get out as much as I'd like.  This year I want to do some hikes in the nearby national park.

My kids' soccer season is now through the end of October, and that's fun.  And the scout campout is coming up.

We have several birthdays in the fall.  Once those are over, it's time to get excited for Christmas.  :)

The temp is supposed to drop 20 degrees by Sunday.  Yay!  Fall is my absolute favorite time of year.

Rake leaves and jump in them

Have bonfire and roast potatoes

Drink Constant Comment

Eat homemade donuts

Walk along the river admiring the beautiful colors

Drive out to the orchards for fresh cider

Get apples

Eat apples, caramel dip, and popcorn and watch horror movies

Homemade hot chocolate

Stack firewood

Clean up garden and pick the last of the produce

Pumpkin everything!!!!!!!!!!!!

Put out fall themed tablecloths and napkins

Savor every moment of the brisk, cool air while it lasts

Hiking is always good after the first frost. Even after frost, we have deer ticks, but at least the dog ticks and Lone Stars bite it. We've got a huge heap of stuff to burn, but sometimes that is a winter job and not a fall one. Often, October is our driest month of the year, resulting in burn bans. This year I'm looking forward to garden clean up, as I let it go fallow this year. My front flower beds are a huge mess, so there is that to take care of.

I'm looking forward to star gazing in the evenings with hot chocolate for afters.

It's unusually stifling here too, really awful. I'm so over it.

But fall is guaranteed to come soon. Favorite things? Stoking up the stove. Apple picking and then applesauce canning. Going to the beach--so quiet after the tourists leave. Bundling up in favorite snuggly clothes. Adding a second quilt to the bed. Hiking in the woods or along the sea. Being inspired again in the kitchen. Common Ground.

There is just so much goodness in fall. Definitely my favorite season, even if they are threatening us with yet another brutal winter ahead.

Fall is my favorite season and this year I am more excited than usual to see it come.  It has been a very hot, dry summer so having a bit of rain return and cooler days has been wonderful.  I love the colors of fall leaves and the smell in the air.  I am looking forward to hot apple cider, pumpkins, and crunching leaves under my feet.

Fall gardening! Fall is by far the most physically-demanding season for me, but I love the work out and being able to stand back and admire all the fall bloomers and faders mixing together. Today I am thinning out my yarrow because it's overpowering the sedum that's blooming. Looking good.

Soon we'll be depositing our youngest child in his college dorm. Countdown is 7 days, not including today. He's only about 10 minutes away so we'll be able to see him a lot which is nice.

Wearing sweaters at some point. Yes!

Walking in crunchy leaves going to the zoo wearing a sweater. Ahh, even better.

Fall is my favorite too.

Things I love

Sleeping with the windows open

Baking spicy, savory food

Crunching through fallen leaves

The smell of the outside (we live in tobacco country so there's a sort of wood smokey smell once the barns get going)

The contrast of green grass, golden trees and blue skies

My birthday

Waking up early to a mist across the fields with the slanting rays of sunlight just peeping over the trees.

Around here, it's really still summer (and hurricane season) until the end of September. Then October is the month of All the Fun Things! Anybody who's doing a festival, outdoor event, etc., plans it for either May or October. Then November is kind of gray and boring.

So here's our October list:

[We're going to cheat and make our family favorite dessert, crustless pumpkin pie, while it's still September.]

  • TV turn-off month
  • Heritage Day at a county park
  • Possibly the festival at DH's church
  • Make DS's Halloween costume (I don't like Halloween, but DH and DS do.)
  • Activity group fall festival
  • Turn off the HVAC system for a few weeks
  • Lots of park days and nature walks
  • Make chicken soup and other cool-weather foods
  • Possibly the international festival
  • Wash the blankets and comforters at the laundromat
  • Campfire & marshmallow roast at a park
  • Field trip to the pumpkin farm
  • Halloween party at the community center, and trick-or-treating Halloween night.

Pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin oatmeal, pumpkin pancakes, and so on...

Apple picking is also a favorite, along with apple crisp, apple pie, apple cider, etc. Yikes, no wonder I put on weight in the fall!!!

I also love putting up my fall garlands. There's just something really comforting and nostalgic about fall colors and the crisp, cool air.

Pinterest is my friend and enemy.  There are always sooo many tasty things to make and try.  I really love when the weather finally cools down some in early October and I can open my window and watch playoff baseball.  When the teams are set, I always make my chart so I can track the records.  Yes, I'm a dork.  I like making fall crafts too.  I bought some pretty cotton yarn in an "Autumn leaves" colorway, so I might try to crochet/knit a leaf banner.

I love love love fall. Favorite season. I hate winter and summer is meh for me, but I would live in fall full time. We get excited to see leaves changing. I love Halloween, making pumpkin bread, I have two fall birthdays (October and November). I love Thanksgiving and then the Christmas season. This is my favorite time of year for sure. I get more cleaning done in the fall than in the Spring because I just feel happier and more energetic. :) I want things nicer for the holidays.

I never liked fall -- it made me think too much for winter and cold and everything dying -- until I moved here, and fall is gorgeous, and then I had an October baby.

We like:

Pumpkin carving

Crunching leaves

Apples! I live in major apple country.

Applesauce and baked apples

Hayrides

Fall festivals

Corn mazes

Sweater knitting

Maybe I'll get to the waxed leaf banners this year.

Google fall and "by sun and candlelight blog" -- she has tons of great ideas for seasons!

Baking!

especially with apples and pumpkin (canned pumpkin used here)

Wearing long sleeves and long pants but no winter coat yet

First frost

Not big decorators here, but I like putting up our fall wreath, bringing some colorful leaves and acorns inside, and Halloween decorations (nothing scary or gory--cats and spiders, orange and purple lights).

I like the feeling of a well-stocked pantry and fridge and being ready for winter.

It starts with various apple dishes, moves to pumpkin (starting with a pumpkin latte around October 1st), back to apple dishes but with cranberries for variety, next dishes with pecans and sweet potatoes start appearing more and more.

I use the oven more often. We have soups and homemade bread again.

I love wearing sweaters and boots! My boots! I haven't worn those for months!!!

I'm looking forward to more hiking!  I love watching the leaves change and once they fall, there are so many more gorgeous views in my favorite hiking spots.

College football, our town just loves football and even though we only make it to a game a season, the atmosphere around town is just fun.

Horse races in October.  Again, it's one of those things that everyone talks about and gets excited about even if they don't actually attend the races.

Pumpkins and baking more once it's cooled off.

Camping now that my kids are all finally old enough that it's enjoyable.

I can never decide if my favorite season is fall or spring, but I just love the nicer weather.

I **love** fall, especially the apple pies, apple cider, apples... yum.

However, I do not love when it gets chilly out and my kids can no longer wear their ratty summer clothes. My DS6 put on jeans today and the hems hit his calves. DS9 put on a hoodie and it's way too short (sleeves and waist). The raincoat we bought last spring can't even be zipped up anymore. :svengo:   No closed-toed shoes fit. The only things that fits anymore are hats. Oh, fall. You're delicious, but really dent the pocketbook...

[Edited because I have typing issues and somehow had a random "is" in the second sentence.]

  • 3 weeks later...

Love fall.

We have a lot going on at our church--we make apple butter (last weekend) and have an old fashioned country fair (this weekend!).

We start up the Sunday School, and I love that because my husband is an awesome teacher.

I'm not big on carving the pumpkin every year--we are over it, but we still do it.

I love the switch to cooler temps and the warmer clothes.

Love the colors of the fall, and I bring a lot of natural materials into my classroom.

Fall foliage!  We don't get any where I live but if we drive 4 hours northwest, there is one little park that gets beautiful fall foliage.  In early November.  Some years, we take vacations in the fall just to drive though all the fall foliage in other states.

Pumpkins!  Love to decorate them, love to take pictures at the pumpkin patch.  Love love love pumpkins!

Fall Festival!

Halloween costumes!  I'm sad because my dd wants to use her costume from last year, so I can't buy her a new one.

Cooler weather!  Although more so in November than October.  Still, it should drop into the 80s at least in October.

Decorating my house for fall and then for Halloween and then for Thanksgiving is also really fun.
