Ballroom dancing?

Any dance store should have shoes that are good enough, if she is just starting.  "Character shoes" are the kind of shoes that dancers wear in a theatrical performance.  The soles of character shoes are leather.  But I have seen plenty of teens dance in that kind of shoes.  They are better than street shoes.

Ballroom dance shoes have a suede sole.  This is a pair of men's shoes.  There is a picture of the bottom of the shoe - if you zoom in, you can see the texture of the suede.  If you look at the listings for ballroom shoes, many of them come with a brush for cleaning the bottoms.  Sometimes they get too dirty, or too covered in wax and need to be cleaned.

Does the dance teacher have suggestions for a store near you

When I took my first ballroom dancing class with Dh the instructor was content if everyone just had shoes that had no grips on the bottom. Even after that she left it up to us and just talked about the advantages of certain shoes.

I take west coast swing and many of the students and a few of the instructors just get a certain type of shoe Toms, I think - and put duct tape on the bottom so that they can slide. This is the type of footwear most often used in East coast / Lindy Hop. And since most of the people at my dance hall take both types this is what they use all the time.

Yay, ballroom!

Suede bottomed shoes do help.  Truly.  But, suede can be put onto character shoes if you want.

For a practice dress, does it need to be a dress?  Or just a full skirt and a top?  Anyway, if you can find the dance supply store that carries the shoes, they will also have skirts that would work well.

Is she doing latin and smooth, or just one or the other?  That would affect which shoes and which skirt you might buy.
