Back and getting eval results soon

Recommended Posts

Hi

I had to take a big mental break from homeschooling for the summer. I think it did a world of good. I finally took my 8 year old son to a dyslexia center to testing. The Dr. gave me her initial impressions that he does have dyslexia and we will get a full report when we go back for the consultation on Saturday. I was feeling so burnt out that I had tried to enroll them in private school, but it fell through. The school just never got back to me despite calling. Tomorrow we go for an orientation meeting for a new co-op and my impression of it so far is really good. So we are in for one more year at least.

hope you all had a nice relaxing summer!

So at our consultation we were told pretty much what I knew already but in a more scientific way. He's smart and severely dyslexic and it will take a few years to remediate. They break dyslexia down into types, dyseidetic and dysphonetic. He is severely dyseidetic dyslexic and mild to moderate dysphonetic dyslexic. A lot of his scores are very low: 3rd percentile for pseudoword decoding, 1st percentile for word reading, 2nd percentile for spelling.

They are very homeschool friendly there. The founder has a dyslexic son and homeschooled him for a year. Everyone there seemed thrilled to learn we homeschool and I never got a judgement vibe. They made sure we were clear that his deficiencies had nothing to do with instruction. They even said he was strongest in blending sounds probably because of work done at home. That part made me feel better.

Like everyone else, I'm just most concerned for my son's mental health. This center (affiliated with the Dyslexia Institutes of America (DIA) http://dyslexiainstitutes.com/)can give him remediation sessions. They said they would be comfortable with him coming every other week vs every week due to being homeschooled. But they said due to the severity of his dyslexia, it will take a few years. If money were no object, it would be no question. Now just onto weighing all my options and coming to a decision. I had no feeling of being tricked into more sessions. Everyone there is very passionate and this is their life's work.

Wondering if anyone here has used a specialist for remediation and has an opinion either way about that.
