provenance61
Help. We have a bright kid, who has previously tested into gifted pull-out program in school. He may have inattentive ADHD, or possibly processing speed or executive function issues. But he needs time, considerably more time, to complete his work. Like sometimes 2-3 or even 4X. He just moves slow, even on non school tasks. I already help with organization, and cut back on number of problems assigned. But what now? We've reached a point where this may not be enough. I truly hit a flipping point this morning, it's very hard to also put so much of my own time in and it's stressful to constantly keep trying to be on schedule. Do we change curricula? Do we try to redesign specifically to fit his needs? We are way behind where we should be. We have completed full neuro testing and currently waiting for feedback appt next month. But what if the main recommendation is extended time, how do I talk about it not being enough? How do you know when an academic load is reasonable? We are only in middle school now, and I am truly worried about moving ahead.
EKS
When I was at that point with my older son in middle school, we decided to try medication. It worked, BTW.
Ottakee
Depending on the results of the neuropsych eval I would say that meds made a HUGE difference here. What used to take hours was getting done in 20 minutes with NO problems.
provenance61
I feel better that this may be a possibility. From my reading, I thought that perhaps this might not be an option for inattentive ADHD (or for processing/exec). I've heard that it does not always respond as well as other types of ADHD to medication. I am honestly not against it at this point, as we've been trying to many other options during the past few years. And it really is getting to be a breaking point. In order to think ahead for our appointment, did either or both of you deal with the inattentive? Or with processing issues? And is there anything I should know/read/look into before our appointment, in order to ask better questions during it?
kbutton
I am not one of the PP, but we had speed issues as well as mostly inattentive ADHD. However, we found out later, it's more of a combined type ADHD. The hyperactivity has come out more as my son has gotten older. My second kiddo who has been inattentive is starting to look more fidgety and such as well. I've hear this is unusual, but that's our story! Good luck as you work through the options. My second one is still a bit of a mystery--we're looking to sort it out a bit at a time (initial testing had kind of wonky results, so piecemeal is our next approach). We haven't tried meds yet, but that's on the table. Anyway, he's my slower than molasses, single digit percentile processing kid, so I would love to hear how things go for you. FairProspects
Following because we have this issue, but no ADHD, so we've not gotten a meds recommendation. Not sure how to handle it either.
Heathermomster
DS is my 15yo 2e, slow processor that types most everything. He is diagnosed inattentive ADHD and I expect he will start meds next week. We met with the child psych on Friday. I am scared.to.death about this. wapiti
Musing of the day: in my recent reading about some supplements, I came across a term I hadn't heard before, motor nerve conduction velocity. I immediately thought to myself, well that sounds kinda like processing speed. Apparently, nerve conduction velocity is a thing that has measurements, and I assume the "motor" type applies specifically to motor-related nerves. I'll have to look into it some more... (and yes, I did come across the term with regard to a particular supplement, though I don't know how reliable the research is on that) We will join FP in the land of slow processing speed without adhd. DS received the label last year, aged 14 with the 3rd np. She was chomping at the bit to apply that label. I would love to hear about that supplement.
