Monica_in_Switzerland
My son has launched himself into Middle Earth, and I am thinking of getting him some type of illustrated encyclopaedia for Tolkien's world. There seems to be a lot out there. I'm looking for something that is heavily illustrated. I'd like it to have references to information from other works like the Scillmarillion (sp? Sorry...), Children of Hurin, less known works, etc. Thanks!
Ravin
My husband (who is both a fan and a serious Tolkien scholar) recommends The Tolkien Bestiary or the more current illustrated encyclopedia, both by by David Day. There are also books focused on Tolkien illustrations out there done by the artists that are awesome.
SilverMoon
We really like the David Day books. They're good starters. :)
Twigs
I like The Atlas of Middle Earth. Includes maps, land features, etc. It has maps of the journeys which I find very helpful. There is plenty of written discussion, not just illustrations.
Jayne J
Not a reference book, but your DS may like to listen to the podcast "The Tolkien Professor." Cory Olson is a professor who teaches courses on Tolkien, and has recorded and released many of his classroom lectures, as well as other podcasts covering the movies and random fan questions. Good stuff!
