Dr Hive..premenopause and wonky period questions

I posted before about skipping my period. I am going to be 48.

I didn't get my period at all in June or July(And boy was I happy).

Unfortunately, I started spotting off and on and got my period on August 10. It lasted for 7 days, and it was not as heave as my periods have been in the past. But on day 8 it looked like it was slowing down, spotting like it was coming to an end.

Unfortunately, that is all I have been doing now. Spotting since August 17th.

I broke down and called my GYN, and I have an appt on Wed. I very reluctantly made this appt, because it seems every time I go in and complain about an issue, he automatically wants to do a uterine biopsy(and they are so so painful for me). I have had one done twice. So it scares me.

This has never happened to me where I have spotted this long. And it almost feels like now, that my period may start back up again. I don't know if the spotting going on for so long is due to me skipping two months or not.

I had a full check up back in April, and all was good.

I guess my question is this. Should I be worried that this is something other then perimenopause symptoms, and...what would he do to treat this?

I cannot take any form of BC(High blood pressure and smoker), not even the progesterone only BC pill.(Tried it one time and it was horrific).

I am really not down for surgery at all, very last resort.

Or is this all very normal for someone my age assuming this is perimenopause.?

I have severe health anxiety, so I am hoping it just goes away on it's own. But it's not looking that way.

Has this happened to any of you?

Thank you.

Well, I know that I have had very weird periods/menstruation issues since about age 48.  I remember a few years ago, I'd have 4-7 days of spotting, stop for maybe a week, have it start up again, repeat.  This went on for nearly a month.

Last spring (age 51)  I had what was mostly a normal period, and just when it was ending, BOOM, it started up again -- I practically hemorrhaged overnight.  Fun times, because I was on a cross country camping trip.  I ended up bleeding the whole trip save one day, and still more when I got home.  It ended up being a 3 week period.   After that, I didn't bleed at all for almost 3 months.

These are just a few of the weird episodes I have experienced.  It's a weird time in life.  If you're nervous, go to the doctor, but it's probably normal.

This IS a very weird time in life, isn't it? I guess I am just sick of it. LOL...and with having severe health anxiety, it makes it so much worse. My brain goes straight to something horrific. I dont WANT to go in, that's the thing so I wish it would just stop. Logically, I am thinking this has to do with me not having a period for over 2 months.

I did not bleed heavy when I got it. Not at all. Now it is just the annoying spotting and some cramps. I only have to wear a pantyliner. Most of the time the blood is very brown, an sometimes, it can be a rust color.(Sorry if TMI)

I dont have a mom I can ask these questions to. So I am glad I can come here.

Thank you

I can so relate to your concerns. In the spring I had a 2 month long period. It continued to get heavier and heavier. My blood work showed my progesterone was low. I was given Provera twice but it didn't help. I was feeling worse and worse as the bleeding continued. I finally had to break down and take BCP. I wasn't all that happy about it but I didn't have much choice. I took it for two months and then stopped taking it. The bleeding stopped almost immediately but I had a lot of mood swings so I wasn't willing to stay on it forever. I also had a uterine ultrasound during that time which was normal.

I have also had a few uterine biopsies and know exactly what you mean about them being uncomfortable. I think it's good that you are seeing your OBGYN but it sounds like you're having normal perimenopause symptoms.

Good luck!

I have heard of Provera.

I know I cannot take ANY BCP pills at all.

This whole thing is just so annoying. That 2 months without a period was like heaven on earth.!

I just know that if I go in on Wed, that is the first thing he is going to want to do. That barbaric uterine biopsy. Ugh.

Getting old sucks. And sometimes being a woman sucks.

That sounds pretty normal to me.  My last "real" period was June 13th.  I had nothing for two months (which was lovely), but I've had very light flow now for about 9 days, I think.  It never even occurred to me to be concerned.  If it gets heavier, or I start feeling really tired (possible anemia) then I might go in, but from everything I've read, and everyone I've talked to around my age (I'm 52), I understand that there is a very wide range of perfectly "normal" flow patterns around menopause.

I'm 48 and had weird a period recently. I hope it's the beginning of the change, but I was also taking a lot of benadryl shortly before that because I had poison ivy. My google/asking a few people said antihistamines can affect flow. I started very light spotting about a week early - I never just spot at the beginning. That went on for a week. Then I had one day of really heavy flow. I generally have heavy flow, but this was worse than normal. After that my period proceeded normally. I'm so ready to just be done.
