Anyone seen this?

I'm up to the last episode and I'm pretty sure I figured out what's going on...just want to see how it all comes down.

It's very well done.. but it's intense like Broachchurch just more raw.

Here's the synopsis from IMDB:

When pregnant, 12-year-old Tui tries to kill herself in a freezing New Zealand lake, Detective Robin Griffin has plenty of questions for the girl. But when Tui suddenly disappears, Griffin finds herself knee-deep in small-town secrets.

I recommend it.

Yes.  Just finished it last week.  Loved it.

I didn't have it figured out beforehand.  Yes - it's very raw.  & a bit strange, but really good.

Strange yes... I've never lived in such a small insulated community though.

The only thing that kept throwing me off was the landscape and climate.  It goes from lush arboreal forest to dry grassland (with dry bare mountains) with a walk along the lake.  Plus, at one point they make a big deal about Tui not being able to survive since it had turned cold... but then a couple of episodes later people are swimming in the lake??

Perhaps there are places like that in NZ... I have a friend who lives there, I should ask her about it.

I made a lot of assumptions about this that might not be true but it worked for me.  I assumed that the landscape is just really varied like that.  I also assumed that it got much colder at night, also it would be colder in the lush landscape where she was found.  Also, from experience, people often "swim" in such climates when it's cold.

Perhaps there are places like that in NZ... I have a friend who lives there, I should ask her about it. Yes, I'd be interested to hear.

I thought it was at turns mesmerizing and tedious.  I am glad I watched it.  But without getting spoilery (you'll figure this out by episode 1) it is very much a show about misogyny. It can be hard to watch at times.

Yes, it is very hard because of that.  But also, important to watch.    There were some scenes I did FF through because I *know* what happens, I don't need to watch it too.

It looks incredibly like the landscape on the eastern edge of the Cascade mountains in Washington. It can go from desert-like to heavily timbered very quickly. The exposed areas are much dryer, but back in each valley, it quickly turns to heavy trees. There is a popular vacation lake there that ranges from desert to heavy timber, with very quick changes.

I binge watched the series in the last two days. Very interesting. I'm still thinking about it. I didn't understand the connection between Johhno and Tui's mother? He was at her house, in her shower?? And it took me a bit to figure out who his father was. That was confusing. Sad show. But good. Thanks for recommending it!!

I finally had time to watch the final episode last night.   I really liked it overall, but felt that last episode was the weakest.

Potential Spoilers::

It didn't really resolve several things... like the paternity of Tui's baby.  I think Robin should have re-tested after everything happened. I am surprised she trusted Al as long as she did.  He was clearly creepy.  And it didn't seem like she had herself tested.

The Holly Hunter character never made sense.  Paradise was a refuge, but she herself made no sense.

Those are the things that bothered me in the end.  The acting was top-notch.. The writing was quite good, even with these annoyances at the end.

We do know the circumstances under which she became pregnant, though, so the identity of the father doesn't really matter IMHO. Any of the men who could have been the father are as guilty as the one who actually was.

yes, that is very true.   But with all her father's faults, and there were many, this was a line he didn't cross, IMHO.  He went to bat for Robin when she was brutalized as a teen.  Al told her Matt took care of those scum-bags for her, even though she never knew about it.   I guess I was hoping that Matt would get a little vindication for not going there.  Instead he was an easy scapegoat because he was already such an awful person anyway.

I didn't like the way it ended with Matt, so it's probably wrapped up in that.  `

Okay, I just finished this.  I've been avoiding this thread until I could finish, lest there be spoilers.  So, that said:  SPOILER ALERT!

Are we in agreement that Matt was not actually the father of Tui's baby, that Al faked the DNA results?

And did I hear correctly that Johnna was NOT Matt's son?

And Moxie, etc., what WAS the connection between Johnna and Tui's mother?  Was that Johnna's mother also?  I was quite lost at that point and am not sure I even realized who Johnna was, so I didn't pick up the clues.

Holly Hunter's character really added nothing to the series.

And why add the part with the woman from the trailer with Sarge in the bar?? How was that connected to anything? And her daughter with the guitar?

I didn't even realize that was Sarge who "stepped up" so to speak in the bar.  I have to say, Women of a Certain Age do not come across well in this  series.  Then again, neither do the men.

I think it was him. I kept waiting for it to mean something connected to her past.

I think that Matt was the father of Tui's baby. His sons were telling him that they saw Matt passed out in Tui's bed and she was on top of him.

I was confused at the end as to why Johnno's paternity was tested and not Robin's. I didn't think his paternity was in question.

Tui said she didn't know how the baby got there; I took that to mean, at the end, not that she didn't know how girls get pregnant but that she didn't remember having intercourse.  At the end, it looked like that was because she was drugged at Al's with the rest of the girls.  If it had been Matt, wouldn't she have remembered?

I don't know why Johnno's DNA was tested.  Maybe he asked for it, and Robin didn't?  I have to admit that I liked that twist, i.e., that Robin was Matt's child, and Johnno wasn't.

I don't think Matt was the father... that's just my take.    He was a scum-bag of a guy but not a pedophile.  Of course, I have nothing to go by except my own hunch.    Tui mentions more than once that she had no idea how the baby got there... I also took it to mean she didn't know who was responsible.

Robin requested that all males have DNA testing done to determine paternity for Tui's baby.  That was in the beginning before she disappeared.

I think Tui went a little feral right after the birth (doing that by yourself at 12-13 must be mind-altering).  He was pointing a rifle at her baby.  I'd shoot too.

The bar scene with Bunny (Bonnie??) was a bit odd, but I didn't mind it so much.  I think it must have been done to show a strong woman who does what she wants, when she wants it.  She was pretty demanding about her preferences, etc.  It was almost like a giant middle finger to the misogynistic male culture in that town.
