Planning for an IEP (8th grade w/TBI)

Recommended Posts

My 13 yo is entering into 8th grade. She did not complete 7th grade. I have no idea where she is at academically at this point. She was taken off of school last May. She will be getting an IEP (asap) for this year. They said since it was an injury they can expedite the process. The TBI specialist doesn't think she should be doing any school. She is currently in CBT and the therapist feels that she should be doing something. I agree and so does her primary doctor. Maybe not this week and not at full schedule but there is some discrepancy on how much activity she should have. I don't think she is ready for things like math and science but I would be open to art classes, sewing classes, yoga or things like that. Even things she can do at home in a quiet space and it's not stressful. I suggested something even like writing but the therapist said that might require too much organization on her part.

I am feeling like I should have some things ready for when she feels better but maybe I am just rushing things. On days when she feels good, I would like to see her get out of bed and participate in activities, even if it's not traditional school type things.

Any advice or ideas on activities that might be a good fit? I guess I am just nervous about the teachers at an IEP meeting deciding on what type of curriculum is best for her. I have always done my own ordering and my own planning even though we belong to a charter. She will have neuropsych testing but it is still probably a few months out as they don't even feel she is ready for that.

Advice?

Is the IEP so she can go to school and have it serviced, or is it to get her access to a disability scholarship or something?  What will they do with it.  I'm just thinking if she's going to be in a classroom they have a smaller range of options.  What about historical coloring books, handicrafts, and audiobooks?  One OT we used had these yoga cards in a deck and you pulled out a few to do each day.

That's a hard line to walk when you need to limit things to improve healing but need to keep them happy and satisfied too.

No, she wont be going to school but I guess the IEP allows her to stay enrolled in the charter with a medical note that is can't actually do work right now. Then when she is released she can start with what she can handle and increase from there. Mostly I think it just satisfies why she is not actively working. If she was in public school I believe they would have her on a home/hospital program?

I will look for the yoga cards, that sounds cool. My dd also mentioned swimming which might be a good fit. I think all of those things can count as "school" under the IEP since it's based on a medical need. I am hopeful that by the end of the year she can have the testing done and be doing even light school by January. That's my hope.

I will look for some audio books too. She used to love to read but now just gets a headache with anything that requires concentration.

Yoga Pretzels (Yoga Cards)   These are the cards I have.

The swimming sounds good.  Our YMCA has been really helpful with my ds SN.  Maybe if you talk with the aquatics director, they could give you some options.  Ours has an adaptive aquatics class.  I'm thinking something low stress would be good for her, maybe with a smaller class size or flexible expectations.

Thank you! Yes, she is not sure about taking classes and that's hard because I sign her up, pay money and then she doesn't feel well and it ends and I loose money. She does need a low stress, low expectations, just want to get her there kind of activity but I also like the idea of some instruction or guide, otherwise I think she will get bored. Maybe private lessons or yoga once a month just to teach her a few tricks?

Thanks for the link... :001_smile:

That's why I was suggesting you call and talk with the aquatics director at your local Y.  They may be able to work with you to find some options.  Our Y has teen classes, which typically ahve just a few kids.  In fact, on Saturdays they combine them with the adult classes.  They are usually going with the goals of the students and aren't pushing through a list.  Or maybe even something she's not thinking of, like a water aerobics class during the day...  Or if they have daytime classes or adaptive classes.  Adaptive classes at our Y are taught by an OT and aimed at people with SN who cannot participate in the regular swim classes.  When my ds was struggling, that's what we were looking at putting him in.  So just call and ask.

FWIW, DS did better with private swim Lessons at first. He got to know his instructor and to trust that she was just there to help. If he started having breathing problems or anxiety she was very supportive and helped him work through it. He advanced very quickly with that kind of support and it boosted his confidence as well as his physical well-being.
