Analytical grammar and R&S grammar and Easy Grammar Plus

Recommended Posts

My kids complain that R&S English is boring. They have done all the books from grade 2 to grade 7. Ds12 is still rusty with grammar. Ds10 is better but whines about it a lot. If you switched from R&S to AG, what positive changes have you noticed in your children? Do you recommend it? I really want the next two years to see solid grammar for both kids and wonder how we achieve this goal.

If you switched to Easy Grammar Plus, is it too easy or does it make more sense and help your dc understand and internalize grammar better?

Thanks!

I've never used R&S or Easy Grammar Plus but we're a big fan of AG here! My oldest did the whole program (3 seasons) in 1 year in 8th grade and says he still diagrams difficult sentences in his head when he's unsure about what a clause refers to. That's success in my book! :)

My current 8th grader is finishing up season 3 after doing it over 3 years. My current 6th grader is just starting season 1 and has really really really improved her sentence analysis skills after just 2 weeks and only working on nouns and adjectives and pronouns. Definitely a curriculum we will continue with my younger kids!

Ironically, we're switching from Analytical Grammar to R&S this year.  My kids did not like Analytical Grammar at all and I'll admit, I had a hard time forcing it upon them as well.  The sentences felt so contrived and, well, forced.  My kids couldn't get past that.  I know that grammar isn't necessarily fun and exciting but AG wasn't well received here.  We really liked Sentence Grammar, etc. in the Killgallon series, though I don't think that the series is a good stand alone for grammar.  I like that R&S can be done aloud easier and I think I can make it flow more like Jessie Wise's series which we liked.  We'll be continue with the Killgallon series, which we love and adding in R&S this year.

So, this may not be what you wanted to hear, but that was our experience.
