Carla Posted August 18, 2015 Share Posted August 18, 2015 I use Spelling City and enter in the words from All About Spelling for my kids to practice. Any lists they have trouble on we go over together. This is good for my natural spellers who just need a little explanation from time to time on certain rules. For the non-natural spellers we will end up going over each list on paper, but they easily get the extra practice independently using the Spelling City app (on their device or the website on the desktop). (first year) but I am using a free online spelling and language arts curriculum from k12reader. It is all planned out and the language arts lessons correspond to the spelling lists and they have dictation sentences and activitie to do daily. You could do as many or as few as you want. I printed all the lists and lessons out and organized them by week in a 3 ring binder. I am not a fan of common core but it is aligned and 36 weeks planned out already. We have used bigiqkids, click'nspell and spellingcity. All had the same issues. I never played with them much, there may be ways to tweek them, but for me it wasn't worth the hassle. I love it because it also goes over phonics, automatically gives extra review for words missed, includes cumulative review, is inexpensive, and can be completed quickly. Kuovonne Posted August 19, 2015 Share Posted August 19, 2015 It's not spelling program, and it wasn't designed for spelling, but I use the Anki app to track my daughter's spelling words. Yes, I can understand that. Any app that looks too complicated I turn away from. Children need to physically write the words and in context before spelling takes hold. I combine penmanship and sentence dictations with spelling b/c all 3 of those things done together create a synergy. Even with my pick for a computer based spelling, it's combined with typing skills and dictation. I just noticed that correlation. ha! Only spelling, like through games, might me fun review and it might be enough for a natural speller, but it would never work for my struggling spellers.
