How long do Hemorrhoids Last?

I've experienced internal hemorrhoids since my early 20s, but they always went away within a week.  I pretty much just drank more water and ate more fibre and they'd be gone with minimum discomfort/bleeding.

Nearly 2 weeks ago I developed an nasty external one that was hard and painful, but it was a Friday and my dr. office was closed.  I did some research and treated with witch hazel, aloe and desitin, figuring I'd call on Monday.  However, by Monday is had shrunk and was no longer painful.   I figured it was on it's way to being gone.  But it is continues to hang on - lol!

So, now what?  It doesn't really bother me - it gets a bit itchy at times, but I continue to treat with the witch hazel, aloe and desitin.  I also take magnesium (Natural Calm) every morning.  It bleeds a tiny bit.  I guess it is more of a nuisance right now and it isn't getting any smaller.

Will it go away on its own?  Should I be treating it with something else?  I prefer not to take meds or have surgeries if at all avoidable.

Thanks, and sorry for the TMI post!

I think sometimes they just take a while. If it was 'hard' that might mean there was a blood clot in there, like a bruise. Or it could have just been quite swollen. A blood clot feels like a pebble in the swelling. That can take a long time to go away b/c the body has to reabsorb it..or something like that. It just takes time.  Especially if it doesn't hurt, keep doing what you are doing

Keeping it clean is very important. Have you tried preparation H? It is supposed to reduce swelling and might help speed things along.

I am sorry. I have had this problem flare up occasionally ever since my second pregnancy. It sucks.

Thank you.

I haven't bothered with Prep H.  I remember my father saying, "I might as well spit on them for all the good that stuff does!" - when seeing commercials for it on tv when I was a kid.   I had no idea what he was talking about at the time.

I have been meaning to get  a sitz bath, but haven't made it to the drug store - Target doesn't carry them.  I need to get more aloe, so I think I'll go to there today and see what I can find.

I've looked into a few other things - HemRid possibly.

Thanks again.

Go away? like fall off or something? I have never found that they go away  at all.  I have had them for years and years. I got them when pregnant though they seem to be increasing. I actually have an appointment with a specialist to have them banded and removed

I figured go away, like shrink up and not be hanging out anymore.  Is that not possible?  I won't be ok with that!

I had a bad case this past year and by time I went to the surgeon (for some what related issues) it was mostly healed.   She told me to call the next time it starts immediately and she would  treat it.  It was good to know b/c they were the worse I had ever had.  She made it seem like the treatment would be non-surgical as she said the surgery was worse than than original pain   in her opinion.

I've had prolapsed ones that healed on their own and had surgery. That's the intensely painful ones. But the random just *there* ones that hang out, sometimes itch, and sometimes bleed with pressure? Those don't go away in my experience.

What's the difference between the them?  I thought one was just a worse stage than the other.

I wonder what treatment she would do?  Hmmm...  banding perhaps.  I think it is considered non-surgical.

I have an external one that was baby-related from 1999.  Still there, although it comes and goes.

My gastroenterologist does an in-office banding treatment.  With my insurance it would be around $45.

That said, I can't seem to get around to doing it!
