Talk to me about how you schedule your LA

For DS1 this year, I'm trying to schedule:

Writing & Rhetoric Fable (1st semester)

Spelling Workout

Vocab from Classical Roots

Giggly Grammar (was looking for something more fun sounding...LOL)

How would you do this?

I think we could probably alternate Spelling & Vocab two days each week.

Then do Grammar 2 days/week and W&R 3 days/ week.

Does this sound good?  Is it enough?

I do something very similar to what you have outlined.

I do grammar two days a week and Writing and Rhetoric three days.

We do spelling every day because my dd needs it to be every day.

We don't have an official vocab program until the second semester when we'll pick up Caesar's English which will take the place of grammar on the schedule.

So, an 11yo?  By 11 mine were doing every subject every day. That spelling book shouldn't take more than 10 minutes, and I'd reduce the vocab work to be a similar amount or just ditch it. W&R does suggest staggering units or weeks with grammar. That is still less than an hour a day.

Last year my 11yo averaged a grammar review page, half a Cover Story writing lesson, a spelling assignment, and a couple/few chapters of literature daily.

This is my untested plan for the fall. We are going to try loop scheduling to get to all LA subjects/books.

My oldest has a 60 loop with me plus "homework" writing/reading, my DS has 75 minutes with me plus "homework" reading, and dd8 has 90 minutes with me plus "homework" reading, This is our order during LA:

Grammar

Writing

Memorization/recitation

Grammar

Writing

Copy work

This is how we'll get to grammar and writing more frequently. They each have a lit class at co-op, but we will do two family lit studies during the year and make our Friday LA time be only lit for the few weeks we do those. We are doing poetics and literary terms in our morning basket.

Each category in the loop has a sequence of books - we work from beginning to end in the first book, then start the second book, etc through the year. For example for ds10:

Grammar: Grammar Town, Killgallon Story Grammar

Writing: Paragraph Town, W&R Narrative I, W&R Narrative II

Memorization/Recitation: various

Copy work: various

Literature: Canterbury Tales, break from lit discussions at home during co-op LitWits class, LoTR

My dd8 still does spelling, which is part of her writing part of the loop (LOE essentials front loaded in the first 12-16 weeks).

Enough about what I'm trying. Your loop could be:

Spelling

Writing

Grammar

Spelling

Writing

Vocab
