Macbeth on video for eighth grader

Recommended Posts

I've done a search and can't find anything. If you watched any of these, which is best, and which is more appropriate for eighth grade?

Is the BBC production of Macbeth okay for a 13 year old? on YouTube from 1983 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w0LrdOa7uZQ

Actually, does anyone know whether others in this series would be fine for this age? It seems that for TV in the late 70's-early 80's, they should all be fine.

Then there is one with Sean Connery (!) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ymvrKfY1Bwg and another with Jeremy Brett. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a_IH0EH2Oak

I know there are at least two R movies that I wouldn't consider, and the newer one with Patrick Stewart looks like a modern adaptation that will be more intense, just from watching the first few minutes.

The Patrick Stewart one is the best I've seen, but it's definitely intense - the 3 witches as macabre Saw-like nurses is kind of disturbing.  If it was just an 8th grader, I think it would be fine. My problem is that my 8 year old wanted to watch too - hells no.  That would have been nightmare city.

Ooh, I don't know that one, but it looks promising. The difficulties of finding a watchable Macbeth film production for students have been discussed on the forums a few times. I think it's a good starter Shakespeare drama, but the most well known film versions are all extremely problematic for showing students.

Not exactly a video, but I'm having DD13 watch Macbeth through Shakespeare in Bits -  it's cartoony, but not for little kids - the acting is from audio versions, so it's very dramatic. It includes a side-by-side of the text for each scene, as well as definitions, character charts, and summaries for each scene.

We have the desktop version, but I believe they have a iPad version as well.

It's available at homeschool buyer's co-op for the desktop versions.

I had the Patrick Stewart version playing in the background last night and it does look great. I think it would be okay for just my oldest, the 13 yo. And certainly more exciting for a boy that age than the others.

And I did find the thread about this earlier this year, finally. :) thanks. :)
