Garliclovesgaelic
We are starting to use WWE and FLL for the first time this upcoming year and since we used something different last year I am wondering if I should start my second grader off on level two or work through level one first. Is he going to be completely lost if we don't do level one?
SilverMoon
FLL - He'll be fine in 2. You could get an older combined 1/2 book and race through 1 if you're concerned. WWE - There is a placement test on the Peace Hill Press website. Use that. :)
Charlene
Yes, I agree it would be a good idea to use the placement test for WWE. Otherwise, it is totally fine to do level 1 in second grade since WWE 4 is optional and WWS can start later than grade 5.
Kiara.I
I didn't start FLL until partway through Grade 2 with my oldest. I did start with FLL1, but I also have two youngers that will use it, so the purchase made sense for us. Your assessment of his abilities will be helpful. Is he a very young Grade 2? Is he already reading? We liberally skipped lessons in FLL 1 and did sometimes 7 lessons per day. My Grade 2 didn't really need *that many* lessons on nouns. But a kindergartener might. So might a "young" Grade 2. WWE: Yes, use the placement test. I'd be inclined (even if he doesn't succeed at the placement test) to do narration and copywork from examples you find yourself for a few weeks and try again, rather than doing a year of WWE1. Again, though, that depends on whether he's reading clearly already, follows stories well, etc.
Garliclovesgaelic
He turned seven a few months ago. He is an avid reader and will read anything and everything he can get his hands on (a few weeks ago he picked up The Chronicles of Narnia on his own and is almost finished with that series), and his comprehension is spot on. He wanted to learn cursive around January so he has been doing his copy work in cursive. We used some of Sonlight LA 2 last year.
