Charm Bracelets...talk to me about them.

I'm thinking I want to commemorate my novels some way, as I continue writing. I thought getting a charm bracelet (I've always loved the idea of them) would be something neat to do, and get a charm each time I finish a book. but I know NOTHING about jewelry, charms, etc. I know Pandora seems overpriced. I did look at blue nile and liked their charms, but they don't have all the ones I will eventually want. Can I mix and match from varoius companies? Who has the most charms? I need, to start, a dog, a heart or valentine (Brighton had a cute one), and a camera. Who knows down the road, probably a doctor one, or a boat one, etc. Any thoughts?

Also, I wouldn't wear it all the time. Any other way to display charms?

I really like the 'old' style charm bracelets that girls & ladies put together & wore in the 1940s & 50s. Something like this. I actually bought a vintage bracelet that's similar years ago at a flea market because it had some charms that were meaningful to me. Over time, I have added various other charms (from places I traveled). I like the mix of old & new charms.

You can always go to a jewelry store & buy a chain bracelet that is sturdy enough to use for a charm bracelet. Be sure to let them know the details of why you want it so they can point you in the right direction. Then, you can find charms in numerous places -- ebay, etsy, historic sites/museum gift shops, etc.... For example, a year ago, we visited Seattle, as well as various places in Alaska. My dd (who has a charm bracelet that she's been adding to for years), found a charm she liked in Alaska as a souvenir. She didn't get one in Seattle, but I found & ordered this one from etsy for her. Most charms can be easily added using needle-nosed pliers; some come with a clip ring on them. (I don't like the clip ring style as much, even though they're easier; I think the plain ring you attach with pliers looks nicer.)

ETA: Since you're wanting the charms to reflect your books & don't necessarily want to wear the bracelet all the time, could you install a small hook on your bookcase where you could hang the charm bracelet alongside your books? Or drape it over the top of a small vase that you put on the bookshelf? Something along those lines?

ETA again: This might be helpful to you: How to make a charm bracelet

Thank you all! I looked at pandora again, and it just isn't what I'm looking for. Too..something. I like the vintage look ones more. I LOVE the idea of hanging it near my desk, or putting it on a vase, how smart is that!!!

I will look more at James Avery, and Blue Nile, and on etsy. I think I can mix and match from there. I found a few more too. Thank you so much!!!!!!

I love the charm bracelet idea.  I bought a bracelet for my daughter with little mini books on it.  I was able to special order one of the charms with the cover of a book that she loved.  It was something like this:

I can't find the same etsy shop, but she had lots of book charm options from HP to Jane Austin.  It could be fun to have a book bracelet with your favorite stories, and add your own books over time.

While searching for that, I saw this:

Congratulations on your book!!

I have a traditional dangly one that I had since I was a little girl (changed the chain a few times, but the same charms, and also got a pandora from DH and DD about a year and a half ago.the Dangly one is pretty, but is fragile and gets in the way. I wear the Pandora one basically all the time. And it provides something for my gift-impaired DH to give me for special occasions :)

Congratulations on your book!!

You gave me the idea to google custom photo charms, and if I wanted I could get the covers of MY books each put on a charm. I don't know that I WILL...I tend to think that just something that has meaning to me would be classier. Like a dog for "The Puppy Proposal" and a heart for "A Valentine for the Veterinarian". No idea what the title of the third book is yet though, lol.

That is really a cool idea. How neat is it that you would be able to put a quote from your own book on there, if you wanted? I think a couple in that style would look really cute mixed w/ various shaped ones like you want (dog, etc...).

Yes most are slide on. There are some little clasps (like this) that I have on mine that allow me to put a regular charm on them. I just preferred Brighton because they had leather bracelets instead of the heavier metal ones. :)
