Legoland California - tips?

We are visiting Legoland this weekend as a last minute summer trip.  I appreciate any advice you can give to help us maximize our fun!

When visiting Legoland, is it worth the extra price to go to the waterpark?

What are the must see attractions?

Is there a better time of day to do things?

Is it easy to go to the car for picnic meals?

Anything else?

Thanks!

We went last year and stayed on property. The waterpark was OK, I wouldn't spend extra money on it. The food inside the park is actually really good, so I would recommend trying it. I'm not sure how easy it is to get back to your car, but it's not the world's largest parking lot, so you might be OK.

It is a very manageable park, so I wouldn't worry about the best time to do anything in particular. They do have shows and movies during certain times of the day, so check the schedule. The apple fries are well-known, but our absolute favorite thing in the whole park were the real churros with dark chocolate dipping sauce!

Have a fantastic time!

Oh, I almost forgot! There is a little mini factory tour, and it is really neat! If you are lucky and you say the right thing about how awesome it is, and the German woman who runs that section hears you, she might take you back for private tour. It is the coolest thing ever!

Legoland allows us to bring food in so we brought enough food and drinks for the day. My boys love the waterpark but they just love playing with water at tech museums. Bring some beach towels.

We parked at the Carlsbad premium outlet and walked to save on parking fees. We usually go for three days since it is a long drive from home.

I would say do the water park if you'll be there for more than a day; otherwise, skip it. It is nice, not fabulous, but fun. It was a nice respite from theme-parking when it got hot in the afternoons. We enjoyed LL, but many of the rides were geared toward younger kids, so my older guys were happy to swim for an afternoon instead.

We also enjoyed the factory tour and the Mindstorms workshops.

We were there last Thursday and it was super crowded. If I were going again, I would target the rides I definitely wanted to go on and hit them first. The SkyCoaster pedal thing had a 75 minute wait at one point, as did the Technic roller coaster, and the dragon one. I would get your tickets online, and be at the gate before it opens for the day. Also, there is an app you can download for free that will give you current wait times for everything every time you refresh it - very handy.

My kids loved the roller coasters, the driving school, and the fireman water thing (sorry I forgot what it's called!) We also spent a lot of time just looking at all the lego creations, especially in mini-land. They have a Star Wars area that is especially neat. We did not go into the water park so I can't speak to that.

Getting back to your car is easy - think of a large mall parking lot - not miles away, but as others said, the food is surprisingly good, though a little spendy. We really liked the BBQ restaurant and the apple fries. Have fun!
