Fly strike treatment, aging dog

Our dog is nearly 16 and is having trouble with fly strikes on his ears. What can I do to help keep the flies off his ears? I need something to help heal his ears and something to prevent the flies from biting. He is a shepherd mix of some sort, so his ears are upright like a German shepherds.

He spends much of his time outside, he really prefers being outside and due to his lack of bowel control I don't really want to force him to stay inside. Outside there isn't an obvious source of flies, we keep the yard picked up and the trash is in a covered bin. I don't notice flies near the trash, only on his ears. We feed him inside so I don't think food is attracting the flies either.

Any ideas?

I have no idea but we do have a couple horse supply stores, I'll check with them in the morning. There are always a couple dogs in the store so even if they don't have something they can maybe point me in the right direction.

I use this on my horses and it's also safe for dogs:

http://www.amazon.com/Absorbine-UltraShield-Residual-Insecticide-Repellent/dp/B000MCZVXC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1438141798&sr=8-2&keywords=ultrashield+fly+spray

I wouldn't spray it directly on his ears because it would likely get in his eyes, too, but you could spray some on a soft cloth and wipe his ears.
