s/o age thread - do you have anything you want to do by age [50]?

I chose 50 because that is my next big birthday, but you could use your next big birthday as a benchmark instead.

I would like to get my black belt by age 50 (before turning 51).  I joke that I may arrive to the test with a cane and leave in a wheelchair, but I think it will be cool to do that.

You?

Funny you asked this since just last weekend childhood friends gathered from all over the country for a reunion. We ditched the high school reunions and now just make a point to get together. This year we all turned 50 and Saturday night we went out to eat at a very nice restaurant. I tried to ask everyone at the table what was on their bucket list. I thought it would be a great conversation starter. Nope. Fell flat. Some answered, but no great conversations were sparked.

I think I can objectively say my answer was the least boring: be a back up dancer for Beyonce. I am so not kidding. Just one show. That's all I ask.

Nothing very exciting here.

I would like to have a second degree (BA) by then and have started on a career in that field.

I only used my first degree for a couple of years, and I've been out of the workforce for 18.  I think getting a second degree will be faster than trying to get a Masters in the first subject area.

I have just enough time to complete this, maybe....

Not really by a certain age. I do want to fit back into my wedding dress by my 10th anniversary, and I have several things I want to do with the kids before they turn 18 like backpack across Europe and sail up and down the west coast.

Does having all my kids out of the house count? Thankfully I am on track to do that several years prior to fifty ;)

I don't really have a bucket list, but I'd like very much to have myself and my husband in our retirement jobs working from home by then, so he doesn't have to keep doing multiple jobs for multiple bosses. If we are finally fully self employed by the time he is 50 that would be excellent. It's very doable, too :)

I'm 53 now.  By 50 I wanted to ice skate and I did fairly well.  I don't get as much opportunity to skate now as I did then.  Probably only skated once in this past year, but I did learn the basics and enjoyed it.  I wanted to learn how to use cosmetics better and I did take a class.  So many changes around 50 that I needed a tune up.

A couple summers in a row around 50 (literally, 49, 50, 51)  I started a "try new things" program.  I started out trying something new a few times a week.  Sometimes it was as simple as a different flavor tea, or a different driving route or a new color lipstick.  Other times it was more daring, like a different hairstlyle.  It produced more growth and challenge for me than I expected. I read authors I'd never considered before.  I started a totally new workout, I tried foods I'd never tried before (didn't like some, liked others).  Some things were just fun.....trying on formal dresses "just because."  Other things were more serious like reading material or discussion group.  I found it to be a very good thing to do at midlife.

I have a year and change to go.

I don't really have a bucket list any more. I figure I'm not getting any younger, so if I want to do something, I just do it. :) I'm going backpacking with my sister in a couple weeks, just to try it out. We were talking and realized this was something we'd each wanted to do for a while, but couldn't find anyone who wanted to go with us. So we made a plan then and there.

I have always, always, always wanted to go to New Zealand and it looks like dh is taking me for our 30th anniversary in three years which is the year I turn 50.

Other than that, I hope to have my master's completed by then. I will also be done homeschooling that year and though ending that journey is not a bucket list kind of thing, I am looking forward to retiring from it.

That was exactly what I was thinking my goal was, and I'm also "on track" to have them gone several years before 50. :)

My next big birthday is 31, on Friday the 31st. I hope to clean up the mess in the living room before then. Okay, that's not really a 'big' birthday, but I'm not sure what is. Is 35 big? Or is my next big birthday 40? Either way, I'll probably leave "clean up the mess in the living room" on the list for either of those. :D

I also sorta want to finish my BS before turning 50 (or, more accurately, before the kids move out, which presumably happens some time between my 40th and 50th birthdays).

I turn 46 tomorrow so I guess 50 is my next big birthday.

I hope to be at a higher position at work long before 50.

I hope to take a couple two week long RV vacations around the various parks out west.

I'd really like to take a year traveling around an RV but that's more a retirement plan.

I would like to hike the PCT and the Appalachian Trail.

Me, too! Dh and I think we'll do it once we retire, but I hope we're still capable then.

By fifty:

* do a sprint triathlon - I thought I wanted to do a marathon, but my knees are too banged up from dance to handle the distance

* visit Australia and New Zealand - several friends have moved to Australia and New Zealand looks so beautiful

* visit all 50 states - 13 are remaining

I turn 40 this December and while losing weight seems like a lame item for a bucket list, it's really what I'm focusing on. And not really just weight, but getting control of my emotional eating and becoming healthy. I think I will devote my 40s to trying to find some sort of physical activity that I enjoy.

Mine is black belt by 40 if my feet hold up.  By 50, I hope I have successfully launched all of my children into their own life.

By next big birthday is 40 (I'm 36) right now my goals I guess would be:

- go on an international trip

- become an instructor in Aerial Silks (which is a big one as I just started myself 6 wks ago) It is totally unrealistic due money and the distance I have to drive for classes (2 hrs) but my goal right now is classes for 1 yr and then start training for teaching. I want to bring them to my area. I do not know if it is really feasible but I'm giving it a shot. Already I've been asked how long I'm taking classes, if I was doing something respectable like taking classes for education it would be ok but I love it, I love the circus people and the silks, I wish I could do trapeeze too.

- perform in a circus show (they have performances at the gym I go to but I don't know how long or what level you have to be to perform- it would be knocking out 2 things- getting over my fear of performing in public and reaching a level that is performance worthy- the first step here is attending the next one and finding out more)

-completing teacher training for yoga (this is supposed to be starting sometime this fall)

- maybe do Personal Trainer training

I have a maybe dream of opening some kind of fitness place, maybe with a bit of indoor rock climbing, silks, dance and yoga. My current yoga teacher is talking about having a studio and I've thrown around some ideas with her, that is in the vague idea stage but who knows. I'd like it to be a place for adults to be active and have fun, there is a couple of similar places that I've been too that I think would be cool to emulate. My yoga teacher has a lot more rock climbing experience than me but I don't know if it would be enough to have any of that but I would so love it (and to have a place for my kids to climb and maybe be on a team, awesome!!!). Mostly around my town for adults there is running, a couple of regular gyms, zumba,  and now Crossfit, I'd love there to be a place for those people that don't fit those molds. A place full of acceptance and positivity and encouragement, not of comparison and competition but of personal best and lets cheer each other(really I'd love to emulate the atmosphere of the circus place- I puffy heart love that place and the people).

As a pp mentioned I've been doing a lot of stuff, just because I want to, my motto has been to do all the fun stuff. We went on a 4600 mi road trip to the Southwest with the kids this summer. I started rec adult gymnastics. Seeing me go for stuff has also encouraged my husband who has been going for it with his kayaking (sometimes scaring me). I'm trying to face my fears and do stuff anyway, big stuff, little stuff.

That is next spring for me.

I would like to have lost another 8-13 lbs and to be more active and fit. I am hoping to see a chiro for some help with my back so that I can do some moderate exercise without sciatica.

Since we are in the midst of a family health crisis, my goals for me are way, way less important than they were a month ago before all this started. I am doing well to get through a week right now and looking too far ahead seems presumptuous. I would like to have my Dh healthy and working next March, but there isn't anything I can do to bring that about. A goal that I hope to accomplish is being a good mom throughout Dh's surgery and recovery, sensitive to my kids' needs and hearts and making time for them and keeping the everyday blessings and fun stuff as an important part of our lives.

Similar plans here: I don't have a "bucket" list per say, but barring injuries I will be testing for black belt in Karate before my 50th birthday.  I also hope to be a blue belt in jujitsu with a few tournaments under my belt by then as well- but that's more iffy.

My husband and I are trying to hike every path on the Natchez Trace- but that's not a time oriented goal, just a fun way to spend time together and with the kids.

I want to run a full marathon. I am signed up for one in Sept. and even made it to 19 miles in my training, but plantar fasciitis staged a revolution in my foot. So I've not run in over a month and have been doing massive amounts of cardio at the gym to keep my lungs in shape, and I will try to do the half instead. My foot is not completely better, but definitely on the mend, so in a week or two I'm going to go for a test run and see how it goes. I'll sign up for a full another time.

In the mean time, I've been watching Ginger Runner videos on Youtube, and have decided that I'm going to do a 30K (18 miles) trail run when I'm 49 and a 50K (31 miles) trail run when I'm 50. I'll be 48 in less than two weeks, so I've got two years to work on this.

I would also like to hike the Oregon Coast trail, but I don't know if that will happen before I'm 50. I don't want to do it alone (I don't mind being alone, but I don't want to deal with crazies by myself) and I'm having trouble finding someone to do it with me. My middle son said he would consider doing it with me after he's done with college.

Very cool! This is something I could never do, because I am very uncoordinated. But it is beautiful to watch!

Let's see.....I have 8 months.  Could I lose 50 pounds by then?

I have done most of my bucket list.

The last two places in the world I wanted to see were China and India as of my last count, and I have now done one of those (China) and India isn't as appealing as it once way, but I wouldn't pass up the opportunity.

I was thinking that was a "lame" goal as well, but it really is my only one at the moment, so I''ll jump right in there with you :) Finding a healthy balance in life, regarding food, exercise, clutter, home, family, work and social obligations is what I'm mainly striving for.

I'm having a really hard time coming up with any of the "big" items some of you have listed. Sure there are things I'd *like* to do, but no burning desires, and I'm not that driven or ambitious to set huge goals.

I guess I fulfilled my bucket list by the time I was 25 (finding myself, my strengths, spiritual contentment, travel to Europe and Africa, learning 3 languages, getting my BA, teaching, married, children), so my only desire at this point is to maintain the beautiful life that I have.

Unfortunately, since the crash of 2008, that has been an uphill battle. I honestly have no desire for "bigger and better," when my greatest dream is to have stability and not backslide any further over the coming decades. Yup, I guess having our feet firmly planted on solid financial ground rather than constantly treading water (in others words, being back where we were in our 30s) would be my ultimate "before I'm 50" goal.

My next big one is 40 but in practice I think it's more realistic to have plans for 50 as I might have more time by then. By 50 I would like to have done some long distance hikes in the UK and Europe, generally travelled more and committed more time to photography.
