Positive Sharing Thread

Since we have a Venting Thread (thank you whoever came up with that), I thought it would be a good idea to have a positive sharing one too.

We might already have one and I am just oblivious to it. If so, my bad, sorry!

Okay, so my fifth meeting at Weight Watchers was this past Thursday and I have lost 13 pounds and received my 5% charm and my four weeks charm holder and two five pound stickers.

Meg and I also went to a Far More Beautiful event last night and had a great time. We ran into several people we have not seen in a bit and it was great getting to visit with them. Usually church functions make me wary, but I thought why not give it a try and I am glad I did.

I am back at the gym officially and am strength training and doing cardio. I have had three sessions. It is hard because I have pain and weakness from the stroke, however, you have to start somewhere and I know I will make progress if I stick to it.

So who is next?

I'll play since I vented on the other thread. I spent the last day and a half at a really uplifting Catholic homeschool conference. And it was free :-). Also, DH found out last week that he was chose by our local paper as one of their "Best Under 40" professionals for the area. He was nominated by his boss. He'll be in the paper and there's a dinner for all the recipients in the fall. He got a promotion at work as if July 1, so it's been a good month.

I know it's a little thing but I just got done playing with my baby. She's 20 months old and it's such a crazy, exhausting, amazingly fun age. She gets super giggly and silly when she's tired and I had her laughing so hard she couldn't stand up. Then I asked if she wanted her bottle (yes, she's still addicted) and she said, "Yeah... bottle... night night." Which is the most words she's strung together. She's so cute it just kills me. :)

She also went in her potty twice today. :)

My birthday was yesterday and the PLAN (as far as I knew) was for the my oldest and her dh to come up today. Supposedly, sil had a retreat to go to, only he didn't, and they came up on my birthday and ds even showed up, after telling me he had to work. Only ones missing were Navy girl and her dh but of course, they rarely get leave (and never right before a huge inspection--dd is working 18 hours a day right now). My sis-in-law's birthday was last week and her dh's was the day before, so we had a grand celebration. I'm exhausted (piles of people wear me out) but it was worth it. And I got chocolate!

Happy belated birthday!

Our dryer, which was actually 30+ years old, finally bit the dust. My honey tried replacing the fuse to no avail. The washer seemed to be more of a soaker than a "washer" anyway. We found a really nice set on CL for under $500 just 5 minutes away from our house, AND our neighbor let us borrow the U-Haul they rented for some work he was doing! Woohoo! I really hope these work. It will be nice to have clean clothes. They are HE front loaders, got them at under $250 each. Very happy about that. I love Craigslist. Classifieds updated by the minute.

I finished one big report and am about to get in another. I am proud of doing it and also have gotten some recognition at both jobs.

My mom sold her house and said she wanted to help me out for college like she never did and gave me a huge gift--not huge to some, what some parents give to their kids annually, but huge to me--and I was able to substantially pay down some recession debt. She has never given me money before and I never mentioned my money troubles to her because it would make her sad, and she gave it to my sister as well which makes me feel like less of a beggar.

Finally, I am going to finish a big project for my degree which I never got around to--I finished the coursework but not the project. So I'm going to get that done by 2015's end if all goes well, and then I can ask for a promotion at work because I will have a fancy degree, and also possibly move towards certification in a related field. I am excited.

We got a huge amount of very irritating paperwork almost out of the way today. I can't get anything completely finished till Monday, but I am glad to finally have it nearly finished. This could be a vent about all the little things that are keeping me from getting it done, but that's just the way it is a lot of the time when you're in another country.

Even better, we saw a traditional masked dance today and many, many amazing masks. We found a couple of people who make masks here and were able to but a few of them. I hadn't realized till a few days ago that they do this dance so near where we live and with more traditional masks rather than the mass-produced masks we usually see at these events. It really was incredible.

I am in the midst of remodeling our guest room in preparation for moving our #2 kid in there to make room for moving the youngest out of my room.  (Long sentence!)  The room is freshly painted, I did a really amazing accent wall and learned how to wallpaper!  (And the wallpaper is amazing, google "surestrip wallpaper"....it is super easy to put up and completely removable.  The wonders of technology.)

Anyway, the original "poo beige" color of that room is GONE and it looks bright and clean and fresh and I'm very pleased with my efforts.  It's the first house project I've tackled since kid #4 came along and I feel like I can accomplish things again.  It's very empowering.

On another happy note, we just found out that our 6th grader is eligible to go to the middle school for band this next year.  We have no other options for him to play his instrument around here (other than private lessons, which he already does) and I'm really excited for him to get to participate.  (The homeschool liaison person with our school district originally told us no....but she was wrong.)

My two year old's legs are finally long enough for a tricycle, so he gets to be a "big kid" and ride a bike.  So, so exciting for him.

At a party last night, I was talking to a young woman in her twenties. She asked me what I did. I told her I am a housewife and a homeschool mom. That is usually a conversation stopper. She got so excited and told me how lucky I was and that is what she wants to do when she gets married and has kids, but that doesn't seem likely with her current boyfriend. I told dh that made my day yesterday to hear/see her excitement since that is not the usual response.

There is good food in the fridge and some Theo chocolate :)

We got a wonderful dog last month, easy to train and cute as a button.

It's NOT supposed to hit F100 today! YEAH.

I am working with a wonderful lady three days out of the week - she is part-time but I look forward to working with her every week. She is like one of God's Angels in a place that needs a lot of angels... :Angel_anim:

Husband received paint for his birthday, so we motivated ourselves this weekend and now my kitchen, living room, and dining room are beautiful colors instead of stark white. I'm thrilled!

I discovered that one of husband's work benefits is 9 free credit hours a year at his university for anyone in his family. I'm starting classes to prepare for the CPA, something I've wanted to do ever since I realized that I was in the wrong, wrong, wrong grad program ten years ago. Woohoo!!!

Edited because autocorrect is awesome.

I figured out a couple of days ago that I can write one larger-than-average check and pay off the balance on our lower-limit credit card next month.

This evening, after a quick road trip with my son, I finally got around to clearing out of my car all of the trash that has accumulated since before our move at the beginning of June. I vacuumed and wiped down the interior, too. I'm always much happier driving all over town when my car isn't gross.

My husband has tentatively suggested that I consider designing and building myself a "beach" in the backyard, aiming at having it done in time for my birthday in October (which is also when the temperature drops enough that I can stand to be outside. It'll be simple and won't involve actual water, except for maybe a small burbling fountain, but I do love a project.

Yesterday, my dh got home way earlier than expected from a project at his parents' lake house. I was working on switching out curriculum in the classroom and he helped. A lot. For hours. Later, because my allergies were going crazy he went out and got me Benadryl. Even better, he thought I might go to bed early, so he put the freshly washed sheets on our bed. I love that man!

I got to meet the lovely sister of a dear friend and have lunch with wonderful ladies today.

A friend I haven't seen in 4 years is coming in town tomorrow.

Hubby and I have had a wonderful reminiscing trip in my hometown.  My 30th high school reunion was fun.  Fireworks they had for a local festival (25 min worth) were terrific, we got to prowl around in my Canadian "2nd hometown," we visited my old church and friends who were still there - including a lady who was my first babysitter way back when I was 3 (yes, I still remember some things from her house and that age).  She's 91 now.

And... yesterday after church we had lunch with my dad.  It was one of his more rare good days (mentally).  Just the day before, he wasn't sure he wanted to see us...

So... other than not winning a single game my hubby, mom, and I played over the weekend  :glare: (and we play tons), this short (3 day not counting travel days) visit has been almost as perfect as I could have scripted out.

Now if we could just click our heels three times and be back home missing all the traffic and road construction...

Huge changes for us the last couple of weeks.  I got offered a job, 3 days a week.  Since youngest is going to school in the fall, the timing was perfect and I start 8/3.  Finally found a good therapist for oldest to deal with her life as a chronically ill individual who has missed out on her teen years and all they should have entailed.  BOUGHT A CAR!!!!!  Going from a 92 Ford Taurus that we bought for $1.00,  6 years ago to a 2012 Toyota Highlander, I get to pick her up in a couple of days and I am naming her Serenity.  It is going to be so nice to not have to borrow a car to go off Cape, like we've had to the last few years.  Have had a fantastic 3 week visit with our dearest friends from Denmark, they leave on Thursday and it's always so very hard when they go.  and we are all going to see an old friend in The Winter's Tale tonight!

I'm adding mine in. . . . .

My dh has had work struggles lately (it's a long, long saga). At any rate, he was particularly discouraged this morning and took it out (mildly) on me. When I picked him up from work today, he said he had a good day.

At dinner, he surprised us all by telling us he had received a *small* bonus check - but still, with our income, every little bit is amazing right now. BUT - the biggest surprise - he took off his shoes (dress loafers) and held them up to show the kids.

His left shoe has a quarter-sized hole in the sole, under the ball of his foot. The right shoe has a completely frayed edge, just literally falling off the shoe. He then told the kids that he'd been having a hard time lately, and he'd been complaining to God. When he had bad days like this, he wears these shoes - to remind him that he's worked so hard, through so many jobs, and God has never failed him. That he should just keep on keeping on and move forward. And he wears those shoes on the tough days, as his reminder to keep trusting.

I had no idea.

Someday, I'm going to put those shoes in a shadow box.

My BIL's baby mama and our nephew are out here for the summer. Our kids and nephew are each other's only cousins and it's been great to have them all together for the second year in a row. There was a lot of family strife on that side when nephew was a little guy (long story) but people are at least able to be civil now and tolerate each other for the sake of the kids. It's a very happy change.

I was elected President of the Board of Directors of SUUSI, the Unitarian-Universalist summer program we've attended for the past 10 years.

I've been sort of switching back and forth between "oh my gosh, it's no big deal" to "oh my gosh, this is a HUGE deal." But about 1000 people attend and the program has close to a half-million dollar budget, so it's probably kind of a big deal, isn't it?

We had our roof replaced today!

Last Fall we'd saved $ for it, but we had to spend it on doctor bills when DH was diagnosed with cancer. When we developed a nasty leak in our living room, we looked into it again. Turns out, our insurance was willing to pay all but a deductible. Sweet!

One of my oldest friends texted me that she's pregnant. She's been trying since her four year old was around 1. She always wanted her kids close in age. They have no explanation for why she hasn't gotten pregnant and for various reasons she hasn't been able to seek medical help, though was hoping to by the end of the year. And now, here she is! I can't tell my kids because they are friends with her stepdaughter and she isn't telling the kids yet. So I'm sharing here! :)

I've been so worried that my 12 year old isn't making friends and she'll be bored and lonely, but a friend of her from our co-op invited her to spend all week at her church doing VBS and youth group activities. She's gone all day, every day, and having a great time with her two best friends. :)

Our yearling (pony) who got injured some time ago is finally looking like she's healing.  It was a deep wound right on her hip, so stitches pulled out and we've just had to clean and disinfect it twice daily while waiting.

It's incredibly amazing the way bodies are designed to heal themselves, though without antibiotics and a safe place to "not move" she'd have been doomed in the wild.

We moved her to a larger box stall yesterday and she bucked, ran around it, and rolled - all things she couldn't do in the smaller stall.  Fortunately, her wound didn't pull apart.  I'll admit to holding my breath while she got some of her pent up feelings out.  In another week she might be able to go outside and be a young pony again - running and playing in fields.

My daughter won the ship rally at her Lego camp! Also, we have all-girl Lego camps here because you know how it is in sci-tech classes as a girl... you're the only girl and at best it's awkward. At least, that's how it was for me and that's how it's been for my daughters. So we have all-girl camps with girl engineering student teachers and women engineer teachers. I <3 this camp and my girls just LOVE it.

My daughter won through sheer persistence and by adopting everyone else's winning innovations. It seems small but I am so proud of her. I am also so, so grateful for this camp. I would have loved that as a child. I was always the only girl in the top math and science classes and it was lonely. I had boys who were friends but I felt I didn't belong. I can't express how happy I am that my girls feel they belong, that they own this.

Especially considering how many people here who are doing well, are married to engineers, I really want that door open for my daughters. So that is my positive share. All-girl Lego camp. There is an all-boy Lego camp as well... girls are not excluded, but when offered the opportunity, the girls all opted for all-girl, though it explicitly states that girls and boys are welcome in the "regular" camp. They are so proud. Sometimes they beat the boys, sometimes the boys beat them. But to them, this is so much fun, so special, with their beloved "real engineer!" teacher. Grateful doesn't touch how I feel about this opportunity for my kids.

  • 2 weeks later...

My son has done two shows this summer. In June, he had his first Shakespearean role, playing Ariel in The Tempest. It's community theatre, so it's not like they are getting reviews or anything, but he got very nice responses from the audiences and had a really good experience.

He's about to go into the final weekend of performances of Footloose: The Musical. He's in the ensemble and has some nice featured bits as Travis, one of the cronies of the "bad boyfriend" Chuck. He's in two of the musical numbers that nearly bring down the house every show, "Girl Gets Around" and "Mama Says." The show is going really well and is extremely popular. They have more than sold out several performances, adding extra seats at the back and in the aisles and still turning away people at the box office. Last weekend, they sold out, added extra seats and then started a waiting list for people who agreed to be seated after the opening number if anyone who had purchased tickets didn't show up.

I saw the show a second time on Saturday night and had the truly odd experience of seeing and hearing total strangers imitating one of my son's signature moves during intermission. At the moment, they have pre-sold 75% of the theatre for Friday and Saturday and almost 90% pre-sold for their closing show on Sunday. Because the show appeals strongly to teens and young adults, who are less likely to pre-purchase tickets online, walk-up sales have been very active. So, there's a very good chance they will end up selling out all three shows for the weekend. It's been an exciting ride for the cast, and it's been a lot of fun to see my son be a part of it.

MIL came home from the hospital Tuesday.  Taking her to follow-up with her PCP today.  The girls are still home so can help with driving DS - his classes started this week.  And my head is on straight!  I'm not resenting the time MIL is taking.

Both girls go back this weekend, so next week and following may get dicey with driving her and ds, but until then...

I'll chime in  . . .

I got two great phone calls last night one right after the other. The first was an update from my college son just returning from NYC for his college program and pre-interviews. This might mean my very first trip to NYC is in the making. :)

As he hung up, I got a call and update from my oldest son just returning from a medical mission trip deep in the rain forest with his wife.

I was amazed how very normal my days are and what an exciting season my older kids are in.

P.S. Almost as exciting: a retiring homeschool mom who did a bang-up job schooling her daughters gave me two boxes of her books. Woop!

On the last day of Sailing Camp, when I went to pick her up, the counselors were falling over themselves to tell me what a great kid Middle girl was. Turns out there was a younger boy who was kind of annoying, and the other kids all decided as a group to not like him: when they filled out the last-day questionnaire, for "What did you like least about camp" most of them wrote his name; and nobody volunteered to partner with him. So the boy reacted by announcing that, whoever was his sailing partner for the last day, he was going to deliberately capsize the boat.

So Middle Girl, recognizing this kind of behavior, volunteered to be his partner. When he capsized their boat (twice), she just righted it without getting angry. So he decided he liked her and stopped acting out, and they had a good afternoon of sailing lessons.

I sure hope she mentioned she was homeschooled....

Got a call for DS23 this weekend. He is happy and healthy and doing well in pilot training.

Dd21 texted me a picture of a cake she made for her friend's birthday this weekend. Attemptng a Black Forest cake from scratch in an apartment oven takes guts!

Another positive! Dd has a place for her wedding! We can't do it here at the ranch because the haysheds will all be full (we have a BUMPER crop this year) but a friend offered his place. He's not haying this year, leased it all out for grazing as he's just had surgery, so she can have it there. And the backdrop is gorgeous mountains, which will all be gold aspens that week!

That sounds so beautiful! I love Colorado.
