I have been homeschooling my three grandchildren for three years and I enjoy it very much.  I would like to invite two or three other children to join us this year.  Does anyone know if this is legal in Texas and how can I determine what to charge?  I am not a cetified teacher, but I do have a Bachelor's Degree. I worked as a Teacher's Assistant in Content Mastery and as a substitute teacher for many years, but I can't charge the amount that certified teachers would charge.  Can anyone help me with this?  Thanks in advance,

Debbie Wieske

Definitely check with THSC but I would think you could charge since in Texas we are considered a private school and private schools are not legally required to hire certified teachers.  I would think you could also call yourself a tutor and charge for the service that way.

In fact, there is a local parent that was teaching several kids besides just her own for a couple of years and she was charging a fee.  I don't know what legal hoops she jumped through, if any, but I know she wasn't a certified teacher.  She was really good at facilitating learning, though, so the kids did well.
