Using Elemens of Mathematics Foundations as core?

Recommended Posts

I'm very seriously contemplating using EMF as my dd's core for middle school/ early high school math. She's pretty well finished up PreAlgebra, and I'd like to have her work through a Data Analysis workbook before we begin.

If I want the EMF to be the "main" curriculum, I feel like I need to supplement for pencil and paper work. She's already started Jacobs Algebra, so I thought I could have her do "odds" or a reduced work load in that text for Algebra 1. For a complete curriculum, should I continue to side-along a regular textbook, or would workbooks like the "Spectrum" series- I have no idea how far they go- be enough for complete coverage?

Thanks!

I am thinking of doing something similar.  I am not sure of the need to supplement the Algebra content, however.  The EMF approach to Abstract Algebra seems very complete (but maybe I am missing something?  Problem solving practice?).  However, I am thinking of supplementing with additional geometry content (perhaps working through Rightstart Geometry) and other "interesting topics" (like Egyptian Math, Cryptography, etc.) for fun.

What Data Analysis workbook are you considering?

I think we'll use the Spectrum Data Analysis Data Analysis and Probability. Not exciting, but it covers pretty much what we need. We're a little over halfway through CTC's Discovering Geometry as a sort of PreGeometry book. Since we're doing DO Physical Science, maybe we'll have enough math application for this year anyhow.

After that, I'll maybe keep an eye on things. EMF really is supposed to be complete, although maybe some workbooks from the "Straight Forward" large edition series might be a good side along.
