important sofa questions

We need to replace our completely broken recliner sofa. Our current sofa is 15 years old, has stuffing come out of it in several places, and has two of the wooden support structures underneath broken.

My dh wants to replace our sofa with a leather reclining sofa.

I worry about leather because we have two big dogs (about 70 pounds each). They are house dogs and have always been able to get up on the sofa with us and we want them to be able to get on the sofa with us.

Neither of them has been furniture destructive at all, but we just got one of them a few weeks ago (as a companion for the dog we already had), so we don't have full experience with one of them. They are both in the 2.5-3yo age-range. One is a mostly German shepherd mix (we've had her since she was a puppy) and the other is a mix of something and something else (maybe golden retriever and German shepherd).

I'm worried about two things with leather.

One is that the dogs will see it as a giant rawhide chew toy. I sure don't want to buy a sofa and have the dogs chewing on it.

The other is that their claws will puncture it. My dh wants to get a hard leather sofa. I want something that is comfortable because otherwise what's the point of having a sofa, but I also want something that isn't going to be destroyed too quickly.

What is your experience with leather sofas and large dogs?

We have large dogs and leather. Our dogs are allowed on the furniture, too.

Don't get bonded leather. :) You will have toenail punctures.

don't get bonded leather even if you don't allow the dogs on the furniture.   :glare:

I've bought my last bonded leather office chair . . . . never. again.

Ugh. Can't stand that stuff. It's the particle board of leather.

I think particle board and chip board are more durable.  they're usually fine as long as they don't get constantly wet.

bonded leather . . . . all you have to do is sit on it regularly. (or rest arms on the arm rest!) iow: use it for it's "intended" purpose!

I have a black leather ikea chair that my dog naps in regularly. It looks brand new and it's 16 years old. My dog's nails are perpetually too long. He weighs about 45 lbs. that chair always looks nicer than our upholstered furniture because the hair doesn't stick to it.
