Games!

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a couple of games for ds this past week that I don't think I have seen listed on the board before.

Even Stevens Odd - good for fast visual discrimination skills and fun way to work on listening and following instructions.

Pickles to Penguins - great for category language skills

What games are you playing with your kids these days?

Ooo, those look fun!  Don't die, but my ds loves Goat Simulator.  It's an app, and I'm SURE there must be something virtuous about it.

For board games, right now he has out Tally Ho.  It's a tile-laying game.  Wooly Bully is another like that he likes.  You'll notice his obsession in there when you look at the picture.  :D   Amazon.com: Tally Ho: Toys & Games  Wow, I didn't realize it had gotten expensive.  Maybe the manufacturer sells it directly or something.  Wooly Bully  There's the other.  Oh there it is, that obsession showing up, hehe.  But what can I say...  It's as non-violent a way to pursue that fascination as you can get.  Anything with /sh/ is still big in our speech and anything with cards you can flip (the everlasting /l/ blends) is good.

Sleeping Queens  We took this one so much the SLP broke down and bought it herself.  Gamewright makes a number of other good card games.  They're basically all good.  She LOVED Sleeping Queens because the language is so diverse.

For his fun games, he's been asking to borrow games from the library game lending section.  They're more mature, and sometimes I axe them.  We got Munchkin, but after all the hubbub I thought it was boring.  It's just a math game, really.  Obviously the narrative was lost on me, lol.  He'll play Forbidden Island, still likes Catan Jr, enjoys playing Star Trek Catan.  I'm trying to be careful to use cooperative games or give the option to trade sides or play it cooperatively anyway.  But then you know, with all that fanciness, he just pulled out Curious George Discover Beach to play again.  Plenty of /sh/ sounds with the shells and things, turn taking, spinning, cards to flip.  Still fun.  :)

Forbidden Island is a fun, co-operative game.  OneStep, I hope you guys have fun with it!

I recently read this article about using games for building real-life skills http://lifehacker.com/the-best-board-games-for-developing-valuable-real-life-1714642211

We actually just cleaned out our game cupboards today.  We have games coming out of our ears!! And they are all really good games - we are getting rid of games with redundant objectives or game play.

Some current favorites are Word Bits, Zingo, Munchkin, Tenzi, and Dixit.  I have a range of ages playing games.

There have been some great past threads about games for learning if you want to search for more.

Oh, one that I think has been all around great for developing social skills in my ADHD kids and works for a young group is Obstacles

Scrambled States of America

I think the boys have had others out as well. We'll be visiting my parents soon which means Blokus and Boggle and maybe some 10 Days in... games.

I feel decidedly un-therapeutic in our play after this thread, lol.

A few of our favorites have already been mentioned (Catan, Forbidden Island - LOVE, Sleeping Queens).  We also love the Ticket to Ride games.  Headbanz is actually quite tricky for my DD, so we'll pull that out occasionally.  We also like Rat-a-tat-Cat, Castle Panic, and good ol' Yahtzee.

We love board, card, and computer games. Right now we are introducing a little world history and geography through Civilization V. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

I love Civilization!! I am sad to say my last version was III and won't run on my computer anymore (may have to get V). I love your reasoning too!
