Good (preferably free) resources for learning Arabic?

Recommended Posts

I've decided to experiment with learning Arabic for myself. I figure that even if I don't stick with it long-term (I don't have a good track record of sticking with language study), the experience of trying to learn a language with a non-Roman alphabet and in which I know virtually nothing will help me have a little more empathy for the students I may be tutoring as a literacy tutor (something I hope to get back to doing in the future when my schedule settles down). I also need something to challenge me and get me out of a rut.

So, can anyone give some suggestions for good apps (Android-based, from Google Playstore), websites with printable practice sheets, online courses with good reputations, etc? At this point, free is a high priority and I'm not above using something aimed at kids if it works. :) Currently, I'm working with a program through Memrise, but I've only worked with a few letters so far. Unfortunately, my schedule doesn't lend itself to an outside in-person class right now or I'd contact one of the local mosques to see what they have.

For example, I like these practice sheets from education.com because they give a transliterated form of the word used as an example, which helps me begin to connect the letter shapes with the sounds http://www.education.com/worksheets/arabic/. Unfortunately, you can only print a few pages without an account, so I'd love to find something similar that is free, if possible.

Start here to learn the letter sounds: http://www.madinaharabic.com/Arabic_Reading_Course/Lessons/L000_001.html

Finish those 18 (I think) lessons, all with audio, and you can then move to this site: http://readarabic.nflc.org/?lang_id=1&lev_id=1&page=2  (play around, it will read it to you and there are online Quizzes, it is not formal Arabic, but a modernized arabic)

Youtube videos that are good for hearing the sounds:
