If I can get only one science encyclopedia, which one should it be?

Recommended Posts

I haven't bought any new science encyclopedias in years. My dc still love reading the Magic Schoolbus books, etc. My 9 yo reads science books before bedtime. He still loves "The Berenstain Bears' Big Book of Science and Nature."  We have a variety of Usbourne science encyclopedias. Lots of great photos and information. I don't think you necessarily have to limit yourself to one science encyclopedia for ever and ever amen. Visit the library and bring home a bunch of different books. There are so many topics to cover, that no single book is going to do the enormous field of science complete justice.

The neatest book we just borrowed from the library was "Science Verse," by J. Scieszka and L. Smith. It takes a variety of poems and adapts them using science terms and expressions. My dc love it! One poem takes "Jaberwocky" and changes it to "Gobblegooky," using all sorts of science terms.

We used the Dempsey Parr Science Encyclopedia, but it's OOP now.  Super cheap on Amazon

Nice illustrations, easy to talk thru without reading every bit of type, etc.

Covers everything but biology, for which I use Usborne's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Natural World:
