HeatherH720
What are your thoughts on using Bookshark's 8th grade US history for 10th grade? A secular curriculum is a requirement for my 10th grader so it's been tough trying to find one, and it does say ages 12-16. My younger son used the Hakim books and I really liked them, but I know they are not high school reading level. I say that but I feel like I learned more about US history reading them as an adult than I ever did in high school, so part of me thinks, what does it matter if they're an easy (but enjoyable!) read? But then maybe it *does* matter when colleges look over your transcript and see what textbookss were used. Any input is appreciated! *We'd only use the history portion of Bookshark, not the lit. We're going with OakMeadow for literature.
Momling
I doubt very much that the textbook you choose matters at all to college admissions people. Nor do I think they'd even know that it is a textbook series intended for elementary age. But I still wouldn't use it. My daughter at 12 found it too childish and complained enough that I sold it and bought k12 American Odyssey. It's been a much better fit and still has very readable text.
Mom22ns
SL had that core listed as 9th grade for many, many years and plenty of people used it in high school. We used it when my kids were in 7th/5th grade and we all loved History of US. It is often available from the library. You might see if you can check out one book and see if your family enjoys it. I find it is polarizing. People really like it or they really don't. We prefer history in a narrative style and enjoyed it. It is targeted to middle school not elementary, but I wouldn't have a problem using it for high school. I know quite a few families who have used this Core then taken the US History CLEPs (both of them) and gotten 6 hours of college credit for it.
kiwi mum
There are plenty of people who have used Sonlight F,G and H (Bookshark 5,6 and 7) for high school, which would mean they used core 100 (Bookshark 8) for tenth grade or beyond. Different strokes for different folks. It would have been fine for one of my students but not for the other two. If it fits for what you want for your student then go for it.
