Susan Wise Bauer
IMAGES UNDER COPYRIGHT!!! That includes ANY photos that you did not take yourself or are not in the public domain. Just because you've seen them on other websites does NOT mean it is legal to post them here. WE WILL GET SUED. See our Terms of Use!! If you've posted photos recently, please take down any that don't fall under those two categories. SWB
Liz CA
I wonder if the issue is identifying what is public domain?
Amy in NH
Oh my! I thought we had this problem under control. Yikes.
Butter
Maybe some boardies missed the first memo and have profile pics that are not allowed? I don't think so, but a couple non-allowed pictures have been posted in threads recently.
maize
Susan, has the original lawsuit been resolved? I'm so sorry for the problems this has caused you.
redsquirrel
What about gifs? When I research it, I see that there has been no cases brought to show they do not fall under free use. Buzzfeed has made an entire empire out of gifs and they have had no trouble.
Susan Wise Bauer
Public domain = taken before 1940, or taken by you. You can also post photos that don't fall into the above if you have written permission by the copyright owner. File format (.gifs) isn't the issue. Buzzfeed posts photos because Buzzfeed either pays the copyright owners or posts links to the copyrighted images. I can't even tell you all how much I regret that this is an issue. But it is, and PLEASE read our lawyer-approved terms of use at http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/index.php?app=forums&module=extras§ion=boardrulesAND abide by them. Mimm
I apologize! I posted a picture recently, instead of a link. I completely forgot the new rule.
JFSinIL
I apologize! I posted a picture recently, instead of a link. I completely forgot the new rule. Mimmm, your profile picture!!!! Isn't that from a Disney cartoon.

MarkW
As someone who just got here but has been a web admin forever, based on the very limited info I can glean from this thread, any lawsuit seems like it must have been targeted deliberately. Are you talking about hyperlinks to images on other servers (ie, img tags or href tags) or are you talking about uploading those images to this forum software directly? The former should be allowed. Every forum on the internet gets away with that, more or less. Imgur would be out of business in a day if this were really a big deal... 1
Robin M
Hi Mark and welcome to wtm. The main thread is on the general Ed board but here is a link. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/527989-absolutely-essential-all-users-please-read/ Yes, Susan was deliberately targeted. We can link to outside sources but images of celebrities and non public domaine pix may not be used in any way, shape or form. Book covers and our own photos are okay.
