So, if my rising 6th grader really hates novel length lit studies...

Recommended Posts

I have picked out 3 Progeny Press Lit Guides.  She has a very strong aversion to full length novel literature studies.  ...

We have a Holt Elements in Literature textbook that she is extremely interested in.  She loves the layout, is interested in the variety of excerpts and genres, and is just super super interested in it.

It contains all discussions about all literary elements, covers several genres in detail and has all the discussion and comprehension and critical thinking questions you might want at the end of each story and unit.  ....

SHould I just use the Holt Book and Skip the Progeny Guides?  Or use the Holt book and just do one Progeny Guide?

In general, we do perform better here with textbooks, if that helps the discussion.

Hi CT! Good "seeing" you!  :seeya:

You know I am more of a lit study gal, but if your dd prefers Holt then I vote --go for it! Her life will not suffer if she has not read the entire Jane Eyre or Old Yeller.

To me the two main purposes in learning to read well, it to be able to communicate well, and know how to rightly divide the Word of Truth. I think you have your bases covered.  :)

I say skip them, but I am in the camp that thinks serious lit study is more suitable for grades 10 & up.  For our grade 6 student, we plan to read the book and then discuss.  At this age I want her to love and enjoy the books.  When she's older we will dissect them.

I would say go for the Holt if that is inspiring her. If you want her to read full length novels you might have her choose one that is feachered in the Holt book. Every 2-4 weeks have her look back at what she has studied and choose a book that looked interesting. I would make the study of the full novel casual and conversational rather than formal. You might also let her choose read alouds from the Holt text. Use the Holt to foster an interest or at least a tolerance for full length books.

I used Holt literature basal text with my 6th grader and novel studies. We read several of the excerpted novels and recommended novels in the text as read alouds which we simply discussed. I also added Memoria Press recommended. Novels that we read over the quarter (4 this year- Anne green gables, Bronze Bow, Trojan Wae and Robin Hood). These novels we would tag team read aloud a couple of times a week. I had him work the first study guide with vocab and questions, but I didn't like the method of the guides, so we dropped to read and discuss orally the comp questions only by the end. Plan to do the same next year. With my rising 5 grader we used the treasures basal and read high interest novels with book reports every 2-4 weeks. This is all in addition to independent reading and read alouds with both boys. Whatever works and stimulates and encourages skills building and a LOVE of reading.
