HS Mom in NC
If you want to use real books then I suggest the pamphlet Homestart in Reading by Ruth Beechick. http://www.amazon.com/Home-Start-Reading-Grades-K-3/dp/0940319004/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1432405363&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=homestart+in+reading+beechick She covers when a child is ready to read and it has a handy chart so you don't miss anything. If you want to use a prepackaged curriculum then I suggest Phonics Pathways because it's incredibly simple to use and efficient. http://www.amazon.com/Phonics-Pathways-Reading-Perfect-Spelling/dp/1118022432/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1432405486&sr=8-1&keywords=Phonics+Pathways I didn't do the games. I strongly recommend the pyramid book that goes with it. http://www.amazon.com/Reading-Pathways-Exercises-Improve-Fluency/dp/0787992895/ref=pd_bxgy_14_text_y Note: Don't teach your child letter names first. It's completely unnecessary, inefficient and problematic for some kids. Teach them letter sounds first.
Aurelia
Bear Necessities/Dancing Bears. The Writing Road to Reading is also good, but it takes a few read-throughs to get one's head around it.
desertflower
Phonics pathways. Very thorough and cheap. And yes, I would get Reading Pathways too.
Arch at Home
At our house, two of my 3 children insisted on learning to read Henry and Mudge. So we started with the Puppy Mudge books and combined them with Explode the Code. It may not be the most common way to learn to read but it worked. BTW my slowest reader's reading really took of when he started playing Mind Craft on line. There was a definite incentive to read then. purduemeche
We are big fans of Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Steps (or Lessons? Can't remember). We have gone through this with six children and it has been wonderful.

ElizabethB
Much better title than usual. Yes, but I prefer to teach to read in elementary than middle school!
