Runningmom80
I'd like to use BW with DS next year. (9 in November) He is a verbally gifted kid, early reader, yadda yadda yadda. We will be doing MCT Voyage level in the fall as well. Lit is a big part of our home school, I compile my own lists from various other lists and we read together. I'm wondering if I should include the "Arrow" part of the program next year. I think we'd still have time to read other books, but this would have us on a schedule with their books and I'm wondering how that would work. I should mention that we have not done any copy work or dictation up to this point, I'm not convinced it's all that necessary, but feel free to convince me! So if you've done Bravewriter, do you include the Lit portion?
Eagle
We are going to use the Arrow next year. We have done other parts of Bravewriter in the past without using the Arrow, but I would like to incorporate it this year. We have completed WWE 1 and 2 for copywork and dictation and I have found it very beneficial for ds. It has helped build his writing stamina, increase his short term retention of ideas, and introduce him to mechanics such as comma placement and use of quotation marks. With the Arrow, you only add one book per month, so it isn't a big time commitment. Some books are much longer than others, but we picked the books ds was most interested in reading (and in a few cases ones he has already read and wants to do again). If you go through Homeschool Buyers Co-op you can select the books you want to do from their back issues at 50% off the regular price: https://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/brave-writer/?source=130827 You can also get a free sample issue there of The Arrow: Ginger Pye so you can see what it is like before you commit to buying a bunch more.
Runningmom80
Thank you! Maybe I will consider the copy work as part of his handwriting practice. He's got very little stamina, so that is incentive for me to implement it. Thanks again!
Jackie
Depends what you want. I think the Arrow would be a decent bit of duplication with MCT. The Arrow is a gentle but structured way to incorporate grammar, spelling, and handwriting. While each one does pull from a single book, it's not so much a literature program. We mix the writing and lifestyle stuff from BW along with MCT. But definitely pick up some inexpensive Arrows and see if they fit well with what you want. Runningmom80
Hmmm, Maybe I'm not understanding what it is exactly.
