I have a 5th grader next September!

Recommended Posts

Wow, that was quick. So, it looks like I am back in this forum after a break :001_smile:

I think I've worked through my middle grades science panic over this past winter, and I got through my entire "should I do a 4 year world history cycle again or a 3 year cycle and 1 year of America history" angst in an evening. But who knows, the history thing could just be getting started, lol. And I do have a really nice American history text book just sitting on the shelf.....

I am giving myself a little gift and I have outsourced writing with WTMA

Anyone else starting the logic stage next year? Is it your first time or have you been at this rodeo before?

I will have my first 5th grader come August. Yikes! Upping my game now!

Still have prep to do of course, but I think next year is planned okay. We'll see. Sweet Pea helped choose her studies and is excited about the coming year. She is becoming a young lady and that is fun, though I will miss my little girl!

We are officially logic stage next September, for the first time -- A. enters 5th!  He's been logic level in maths for a bit.

He also seems to have grown an inch this month.  And he completely forgot a few months of math.  It's too early for that sort of thing!!!  (somebody did learn from her pediatrician that boys hit a testosterone surge pre-puberty at around 8 - 10 yo; their first is at age 4-5.  who knew?)

I'll have a 5th grader next year, and honestly, I have no idea what I'm doing.  History is really the thing that's got me :willy_nilly: :willy_nilly: :willy_nilly: I have bought - no joke - 3 history programs for next year and still am contemplating other things I have on my shelf. I'm really going back and forth about the whole US history vs. cycle vs. both at the same time.

We're finishing up the 5th grade age, but I wanted to interject another idea. What if you don't do a history cycle at all? What if you do more interest-led history? I decided to let DD do that this last semester, and she's retained more about her studies (something she is actually interested in) than she did the whole previous year when she didn't have any interest at all. We're doing more interest-led stuff this coming semester. The logic stage is basically the last chance to do any rabbit trails and interest-led stuff with subjects like history and literature and science - rhetoric stage is high school, and unless your child plans not to attend college or you live in a state with no regulations, you've got specific graduation requirements to meet.

Welcome to Logic stage middle school! Have a great year.

My main issue with this stage....science choices.

Elementary years was pretty simple. Just read a bunch of read and let's find out books as well Berenstain Bears Science and Nature book. Watch a bunch of you tube and do a few experiments and go on some hikes and voila. Science was easy.

Middle school/High school-yuck yuck yuck

I'll have my first 5th grader in the fall, too.  And it's only our second year of homeschooling.  I've been going back and forth on history and science, too!  I finally bought a science curriculum and am close on history.  Unless I change my mind again - and again!

What did you buy?  I'm so curious!

We have accumulated History Odyssey Level 2 Ancients + ancillary materials for it; K12 Human Odyssey; and the beginning of the Oxford World in Ancient times series.  Also Famous Men of Rome. !!!

I know you weren't asking me (specifically), but I thought it was funny that we're on the same path.  I've bought SOTW1, including the activity guide (I'd really like us to read through it, and my other daughter is younger), K12 Human Odyssey, and I'm almost certain I'm placing an order for History Odyssey Level 2 Ancients this weekend (during their 30% off sale)!  Still trying to figure out if we'll use them all together or drop something...

I will have two 5th graders in my first foray into middle school. Also, a first grader. I'm trying to keep history somewhat aligned. My history curriculum collection is starting to rival my elementary math shelf!

Haha, I have a similar collection.

I'll have my first 5th grader in September. :) But he is an older 5th grader (turns 11 over the summer) and we have already been dealing with major tween hormones & forgetfulness for a few months now. He may actually even have to start shaving this year! I'm cautiously optimistic about next year. We've had some battles this year with math and writing due to the hormones/Mom knows nothing part of this phase so we've outsourced those subjects for next year.

I'll have a fifth grader this fall too! I can't believe I've been homeschooling for four years already, and soon five! I'm outsourcing history/science which are the two things I feel we don't get to enough. I'm free to focus on the things I really enjoy while making sure the other still gets done.

We outsourced Literature, Math, Science, German and Music this year for my 5th grader. It was a sanity saver. Next year we are outsourcing Literature, Math, Science, German, Chinese and Music for my rising 5th grader.

Anything (especially writing) that is subjective means that my boys are likely to lock horns with me.

We finished 5th and I feel it was one of the most successful I had with my dd. for 3 Rs we used all systematic textbook stuff and she thrived.

We flpped a little in Science and History but I still finished the year feeling successful because I could see a very significant improvement in all areas of math, grammar, writing, spelling and her elective piano.

So I wish you all the best! One thing I missed is rad aloud so we are working that back in for 6th grade. :)
