TheApprentice
I am getting a late start on planning for ds 7th grade year. I want to use Fix It grammar, but I am unsure which book to use. This year he used Hake Grammar 6, so I'm not sure where which book would be a better fit. Any ideas?
mom31257
A placement test is available here. http://iew.com/shop/products/fix-it-grammar-complete-package-6-teacher’s-manuals Much of the labeling is specific to the writing program, so you'll have a bit of a learning curve if you aren't familiar with that terminology. Some examples are: different types of sentence openers are labeled with a number, clauses beginning with who or which are labeled w-w, etc. These are taught as they are introduced. mom31257
I wanted to add that ds is in CLE 6 and familiar with IEW. I could have started him higher, but I chose to begin with book 2. He'll be studying the middle ages next year, and Robin Hood fits right in.
OneStepAtATime
You might consider running him through Book 1 (The Nose Tree) over the summer. Normally it is scheduled for one lesson a day, 4 days a week, but the lessons start out very, very short. It is specifically designed to only take 15 minutes or less a day. The first lesson of each week is done together, but all subsequent lessons for the week can be done independently, especially for an older child. Just check his work afterwards to make sure he is understanding the material. Some people double the lessons so you cover 2 weeks worth of work in 4 days. Even doubled up, the lessons in the first book shouldn't take more than 20 minutes tops, easy to do, painless, and it would get him and you familiar with the program, plus fill in any potential gaps. Then start the second book in the Fall. You could probably continue to double up the lessons for book 2 if you wish, doing 2 a day, 4 days a week, still finish in 30 minutes or less, and complete book 2 in a semester. The program does ramp up with each successive book. Still, as long as you both still feel the pace is good, he could probably finish book 3 in a semester, too. Book 4 is more complex by far as I understand it so at that point you might want to move back to one lesson a day, depending on how you both feel about grammar.... :) ETA: Make sure you are buying the new version of Fix-It, not the old one.
