Paulsen like book suggestions for my DS12

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to find more books my son would love for the summer. He has enjoyed both the Hatchet series and My Side of the Mountain trilogy. He also like the Percy Jackson books and the Hunger Games, but has asked me to find more books like the outdoor Gary Paulsen novels. Any suggestions? His reading level is right around 6-7th grade.

TIA!

Kerry

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Series?  I've only read the first one (Wolf Brother), but it reads like that kind of nature survival story.  It is written from an fantasy native people perspective, so the "theology" of the books are tipped toward a native american kind of slant.  It's not a pervasive theme but exists in their world.

How about The Transall Saga, which also happens to be by Paulsen?

Holes also has the protagonist have to survive on his own for a time outdoors.

Invitation to The Game

Orvis

The Ash Road

Swallows and Amazons

A Long Walk to Water

If it's the living alone that attracts him and not just the wilderness aspect, then he might also like:

The King of Mulberry Street

On Two Feet and Wings

Jean Craighead George's books run in a similar vein, if he hasn't read them.  Another single book that comes to mind is Roland Smith's Peak, about a boy whose mountain climber dad wants him to be the youngest to reach the summit of Everest.

ETA--Read your post too quickly and missed the My Side reference.  NM about JCG, then.  If he's willing to go more of a futuristic/sci-fi direction, there's Nancy Farmer's The House of the Scorpion which is only partly set in wilderness but is very much teen-fending-for-himself and raises some really good ethical questions about the uses of scientific knowledge.  Gary Schmidt's Straw into Gold goes the opposite direction, and is a boy on a quest (partly wilderness) set long ago (based on the Rumplestiltskin back story, though with teen boy characters and not at all cutesy-fairy-tale).
