If your boys loved the book Holes,

Recommended Posts

what are some other books they enjoyed? Ds isn't the most avid reader, but he devoured Holes. He even stayed up last night until 1 AM so he could finish it. He's talked about it a lot this morning.

I would love some suggestions.

Ds enjoyed Redwall but not the sequel. He also enjoyed The Lightning Thief series. He really liked Around the World in 80 Days but couldn't get into Journey to the Center of the Earth. I think he prefers modern writing or writing with less description.

So my kid isn't a boy, but she liked Holes, and so here is a list of some other things she read around the same time that she read it, and really liked.  A lot of these were suggested by Farar:

The True Meaning of Smekday – Adam Rex

The Wednesday Wars – Gary Schmidt

Okay for Now – Gary Schmidt

Skink No Surrender – Carl Hiaasen

The House of the Scorpion – Nancy Farmer

Tangerine – Edward Bloor

And, one of her very favorite books of all time - The Outsiders

DS1, age ten, read and liked Holes. He also liked the Holes sequel, some of Andrew Clements's books, adaptations of Sherlock Holmes and The Three Musketeers, Treasure Island, and the Boys of Wartime series. He is currently reading and enjoying My Side Of The Mountain.

Many I would suggest are already here, but I'll add Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos since it also has quirky humor balanced with intricate plot.

Honestly, I've never read another book quite like Holes. It has a really unusual blend of great writing, great storytelling, intricate plot with the multiple storylines, deep issues like racism and abuse, and a lot of quirky humor.

I don't think I saw that anyone mentioned Small Steps, which is a sort of spinoff sequel to Holes also by Sachar. I don't think his Wayside or his school books are very much like Holes, but Small Steps has more of that feel.

Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool

GREAT middle school boy book (although any girl will enjoy it too). Set just after WWII, full of adventure and mystery. One of those books where you learn something while enjoying a great book.
