javamoma
We have done SOTW the past 4 years for 1st through 4th grade and loved it. I do feel like I am jumping off a cliff a bit with just using a history encyclopedia next year. We own The Kingfisher Illustrated History of the World but this is not one recommended in WTM. Does anyone know why? Is there a reason I should purchase one of the ones recommended in WTM instead of just using the kingfisher that I have? SilverMoon
That particular Kingfisher was recommended in the first edition WTM. It went out of print and other books were recommended in the newer WTM editions. Use what you have! :)
redsquirrel
The third edition of TWTM has really updated the logic stage history process. It does not require any specific resource so you don't have to worry about having the 'right' edition etc. It is more about reading level. There are 6 steps to doing history in the logic stage and the encyclopedia is only one of them. I should add that she does make several suggestions of history encyclopedias but, they are just that, suggestions. It's really about the process, not the material. I ended up not using any of the ones she suggested and by the time we were in 7th and 8th grade, I had stopped using the encyclopedia all together. eta: and yes, it DOES feel like jumping off a cliff that first year without SOTW. I totally understand how you feel! But, it is ok, I promise. If you search, especially in the logic stage forum you can find a lot of threads about logic stage history and you can get some good ideas about how people have approached it.

KeriJ
I'd love to hear more suggestions for books that work with WTM methods other than what are listed.
TarynB
We used K12's The Human Odyssey series for 5th through 7th grade. There are three volumes, covering ancients to modern. Some people around here also really like Oxford University Press's series, The World in Ancient Times and The Medieval & Early Modern World. javamoma
Does the Human Odyssey Series cover Old Testament events? I notice CBD carries it so I thought it might have biblical events as well.

It is a secular series, if that is what you are asking?

No, but Mystery of History certainly does. We are using Volume 1 this year for 5th grade. I've been studying it ahead of our start date, and I think it's wonderful. ....
I do feel like I am jumping off a cliff a bit with just using a history encyclopedia next year. Yeah, it seems strange at first. If you're including library books on different topics and literature from the time period, it really adds up. Also, the summarizing, outlining, map work and timeline will beef it up. javamoma
Thanks for the replies. My plan was to follow the WTM program and use the history Encyclopedia and maybe add in Old Test. events (which seems overwhelming to plan out). But now I am considering some of the curricula choices you listed above. Dang. Now I don't know which route to choose.
