Harvard's Intro to Computer Science MOOC - anyone try it?

Recommended Posts

We gave it a try....it looked promising, but ultimately did not work out.

A couple of reasons -

-First few classes are pretty straightforward, but it gets tough after that

-Hard to know if you are on the right track without getting direct feedback

-The attempt to make the class 'fun', just kind of made it weird.

-My kid took this without any previous programming experience (and the course listing said no experience necessary) -- but I think you need to have some to have the ability to get up to speed quickly.

Finally, I know that they sent an email saying they have 'tweaked' the course -- so your experience may be different.  I think we are going to look for an online class with actual instructors --  :001_smile:

Acorn, Thanks for sharing your experience with it.  I read a few reviews which seem to mention similar problems with it.  Maybe they are responding to some of this initial feedback.  Right now I'm leaning toward these two courses.  Amplify seems to get good reviews and they may offer an option for more teacher assistance if needed:

1.  Berkeley's AP Computer Science course on EdX

2.  Amplify AP CS course

Hi Derek,

Are those classes that have a set time to begin, or can you begin them at any time and work through them at your own pace?  It looked to me like they don't begin until the fall, but I wasn't sure.

Yes, I think you are correct.  Based upon their websites it looks like they start in the Fall.  So for Summer I am looking at doing something a bit shorter like possibly:

DS did it.  The learning curve is STEEP.  He had IT guy dad to help him over some of the hurdles in about session 3 or 4, and that set him on the path to carry on.  Without that I don't think he could have done it.  He came to it with nothing but code.org for background.
