newbieoftwo
Does anyone have kids that come home from school tired and ready for sleep? My son comes home exhausted and grouchy and tries to head straight for his bed. I tried forcing him to stay up, but that has caused massive meltdowns. This was my child that took solid naps until he started school at 6. He goes to bed around 8:30pm and wakes up between 6:15am and 6:45am, so he is sleeping a good amount at night. Should I allow him to nap? Limit the time? Move bedtime later to accommodate the nap?
SKL
As long as you can accommodate his sleep schedule and he's happy, I say, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Is he able to complete required homework etc., and get some exercise every evening? Does he happily go to bed at bedtime? My kids napped at school until they started 1st grade. One of mine would have loved to continue napping, but it wasn't a realistic option, so that was that. At age 6 she went to aftercare from 3pm-6pm, which she enjoyed, and then we would usually do something physical after that, followed by homework / afterschooling. She has always been happy for bedtime after a busy day. :) If she came home right after school and took a nap before evening activities, that would have been fine too. EKS
I would move his bedtime up an hour and see if that helps.
Arcadia
My 9 year old needed an hour of afternoon nap to recharge after school. My 10 year old gave up naps as a toddler. Let him nap and recharge. It is hard to do anything if he is exhausted by school.
Junie
I remember being so exhausted after school that I couldn't even walk up the stairs to my bedroom. This was when I was in high school. I walked in the door, crawled up the stairs, and climbed into bed until dinner. Please let him sleep.
newbieoftwo
Thank you all so much for your advice! I let him sleep for about an hour and he woke up so much more pleasant than the past few days! He still went to sleep at 9 without any problems. :hurray:

Bluegoat
Some kids just need more sleep. My seven year old is in bed at 8:30 and doesn't usually wake up until 8:00.
