Which online Latin for this summer (and beyond)?

Recommended Posts

For a new Latin student, rising 8th grader.

The options I am aware of that are billed as prep for Latin I in the fall are

Latin Jumpstart/Classical Academic Press  ($200)

Online Introductory Latin/Harvey Center ($200)

Latin Transition/Veritas Press  ($500).

Any experience out there?

Thank you.

Just edited title upon remembering that our choice for summer Latin might be connected with which provider we will use for subsequent Latin instruction.

Any suggestions for long-term Latin?  There are too too many choices.

I'm not familiar with all of those, but I'm guessing that the first two are lighter intro classes.  That would be my choice for summer.  It would also give you a chance to see how you like the provider and if you like Latin. From there you can also get an idea of what your goals are.  It actually isn't bad to change providers after you finish the basics (2-3 years).  Once you have the basic grammar, you can pick your literature classes depending on the difficulty you want.

One of mine fell in love with Latin in the first month of a local class, and we ended up going all the way through AP Latin with him, doing VPSA Latin 1-2 and then Lukeion Latin 3-4 for high school.

The other does well, but is not as into it.  For her, we did two years with VPSA and then are going to CAP for Latin 4 because of scheduling issues.  CAP's Latin 1-3 is equivalent to VPSA's Latin 1-2 in content. I'm encouraging her to do their Latin 5 after that, but we'll see.

I don't have experience as my daughter jumped straight into Latin 1 but Wilson Hill Academy has a summer Jump Start Latin that is the same as their full year course. If you go to their website, click on register on the right to see the classes with descriptions. Joanna Hensley teaches it and gets great reviews. I'm switching my daughter to Latin 2 at WHA this fall.
