Pronghorn
Has anyone used Middlebury Interactive for your foreign language? It is on Homeschool Buyers Co-op this month. I am interested particularly in Chinese but feedback on any languages would be helpful.
EKS
We tried it for two weeks (high school German) and I thought it was terrible. Very little practice, and unless you get the teacher support, only the things that can be graded by a computer are checked.

Do you know what type of additional materials are graded with teacher support? Thx. I am curious about this program, too, as I see a number of virtual high schools use the program for their foreign language options.

It was anything that wasn't a fill in the blank type answer--so anything involving writing sentences or speaking.
amsunshine
Thank you. Interesting. We may keep this on our list of options....
anne1456
I used it for French II without the teacher support, and thought it was ok. My son and I much preferred it to BJU online, which we used for French I. But I think it would be tough to do without teacher support if you don't know at least a little of the language. I sat next to my son as he did it, and made him re-do the speaking until he got it good enough, and graded the writing. I had French in high school, so it had been a while, but it was enough that I was able to help some. It seemed to follow a very standard high school level French curriculum.

So there is some writing in the course, even without the teacher support? I know French, so I can help dd, similar to what you did with your son. kasien7
I have used it this past year with my 4th grader, as his intro to French. We did not used teacher support. He has really enjoyed it and has been very willing to do his lessons. This summer he is in a small French class (4 kids) with a teacher and although he is the youngest child in the class, he is significantly ahead of the other three kids (his sister, included.) He also has a much better accent than his teacher who is not a native French speaker. I don't know how it would be for more advanced students, though. Middlebury has been a great introduction. I think if I were going to commit the extra expense of teacher supported learning, I would just hire a private teacher.
Insertcreativenamehere
I bought Spanish for grades 1, 4 and 6 for this coming year. My first grader has gotten about 1/4 through the course and LOVES it, but I have not yet seen the more advanced courses. I do know Spanish, so I have been reinforcing what she learns in her lessons at other times during the day.
bluedarling
My son did it for French I (switched in mid-year) and II. It was OK, in that he got through it. He then tried it for French III, and was totally overwhelmed. He tried to finish the first semester across the entire year, and couldn't get through it. I think this is because his listening and speaking skills just weren't where they should have been after French II....too much reliance on google translate left him without a firm foundation. He also tried to take French III in public school, and the expectations were even higher there. I don't feel French I and II prepared him properly. However, if he was only satisfying a language requirement of French I and II, it would have worked fine. It was better than other things we had tried. I highly recommend regular interaction with a teacher for foreign language.
