Accountability Thread 4/12-4/17

Recommended Posts

Today I'm being productive.  Yesterday was an awful allergy (rain/mold) and non-sleeping toddler (up until 3 am and we had to be up before 6 am to take him to one of the other grandparents to visit) day and I need to make up for spending 24 hours in bed.  Fortunately large doses of ibuprofen and allergy medicine have done their job and the elephant has decided to sit somewhere other than on my face today.

Today's job, prep for the week ahead.  Plan meals, make the grocery list, and clean out the fridge.  Loosely plan where we will be fitting in school for the week.  I think I'm going to have to way speed up math for a while since DD is applying the concepts we did in addition to subtraction much better than I anticipated.  We may hit the library today since the toddler is gone and it is a bit easier to browse without him.  Other than that....relax.

Glad your testing is done critter! Hopefully it's all downhill from here for you guys!

Stefanie! Relax! Sounds like a bit of grueling few days.

I'm on the fence today: either plan for the week ahead (smartest plan) or take the three olders to a movie in town (the funnest plan). Neither of my boys have even been to a movie theatre before.

It's chilly and grim out with patches of sunshine now and then, so not incredibly inspiring as far as yard work or gardening goes. The kids and I started a bunch of plants indoors, next I'd like to get the lettuce/greens bed started but . . .

Oh, I could just cry.  I looked at the forecast for the week.  Solid rain for the next 4 days at least.  I guess that is why despite over 12 hours of sleep last night, I still needed a 2 hour nap this afternoon and feel like I'm moving though sludge.

:grouphug: It's going to be raining here, too.

We kind of need it, but now I'm wishing I'd found enough time to till the garden this weekend. No chance of that now!

I've been putting things on order forms and taking them off most of the afternoon. :D

Oooooooo. How fun! I'll have a big box of books waiting for me at my favorite supplier when I got to a conference on the 25th. I could get 15% off and no shipping so that's the way I usually go (shipping in Canada is expensive). I'm so excited! I also have several PDFs in my ibooks library waiting to printed out. AND I still have a bit of extra school money to play with at the conference so I've been playing with my shopping list for the past few weeks lol.

As for school today, we're trying something new again. DS8 is rebelling our 6am start. My early bird baby is growing up! He actually said to me, "Mom, it's just that as I get older, I can see why adults like to sleep in." So, we're shifting things. For some reason it's my nearly 9 yo who has the hardest time with a new schedule! So I expect some frustration today (even though she also wanted some changes) and I'm trying to prepare myself to deal with them with my sense of humour (and especially my dignity!) intact :)

*sigh* Starting with a trial here.  We'll see what kind of school we get done since DD is trying to play "sick" to get out of her swimming lessons a day early.  I think I'm going to follow through and enforce strict bed rest with no TV, her biggest currency and see if she learns a lesson.  It seems she's forgotten she has gymnastics on Monday's. If not, I'll just have to force her through the day tomorrow and make her do everything she's missed....and no TV as a punishment.

Okay....guess we really are "sick".  After an hour of bawling about how she was too sick to do this, but not too sick to do that.....someone ran to the bathroom and vomited a belly full of snot.  She still has to rest, but I let up on the no TV restriction and she'll have to do make up work tomorrow.  Gave her an allergy pill too.  When her daddy wakes up he'll get to play babysitter and I'm going to have to run my errands I can't do now.

Aw, too bad Stefanie. I hate it when my kids are right about stuff like that! Hope it's short lived!

Well. I'm trying to do yoga in the afternoons while the kids have quiet time. 330. Just do it. But at 330 today my DSD8 asked me for a new audio book. That's NEVER happened! My son asks aaaaalllll the time. I try and do a lot of library audio books with audible books as a special treat. DSD was disappointed to learn that there is no sequel to Matilda, which I thought was cute. But she also asked for books about wild horses, so I bought Misty of Chincoteague from audible for her. I hope she listens to it, not only did that replace yoga, it took up my last audible credit :P

Well, I've missed y'all!

I lost power around noon and I lost my ability to post shortly before that! No sooner do I update that I can't post and suddenly I can post again. Weird!

We did not have a good day. I kept my cool. But the constant negativity on the part of the dear offspring contributed to my complete lack of ability to listen to their little voices this evening. I did explain this in a reasonable way, and to their credit, they are keeping to themselves this evening and letting me relax.

I have the full list of the book order to go out this weekend. The house is cleaned. It's getting dark and raining and my sore throat has turned into a cough. I think I will go make myself a cup of decaf tea, sit beside the window and listen to it rain for a while.

Sdel, sorry to hear about your little one. I can't "like" sick. :grouphug:

Well, for me, school got done. People got fed. Dishes are mostly caught up. I filled out the online registration questionnaire from the therapist we're supposed to see tomorrow. I didn't get the email sent that I need to or any writing done. I may revisit that later after the kids are in bed, but I am REALLY dragging today. I think I may have forgotten my thyroid pill this morning. Bleh. Tomorrow is another day.

Yeah....thanks guys.  She's feeling better now, although I'd believe her the first time if it wasn't for the fact she tries to be "sick" to get out of things routinely.  She spent most of the day in her room off and on asleep.  That is how I knew she was really sick.....she NEVER sleeps unless she is strapped down.  Her granny brought her some chicken noodle soup to eat.  When I got her up to eat she was very red and hot, now that DH gave her some medicine she's up and about and playing bubbles with the toddler who is running around going "bub, bub".  I already cancelled her swim lesson for tomorrow.  (DH is going to be made to clean up the soap mess since he's allowing them in the house)

So, tentatively hoping we'll be back to business tomorrow.....

Critter - Sorry it was a rough day.  I don't like negativity either....

Critter, sorry your day was rough!

Ours was pretty good we got most things done and went out to lunch with my older kids, the boys loved that! We did have a moment with my 6th grader not understanding what he needed to do in his fractions workbook,"well, gee son those little things at the top of the page are instructions, read them." And those problems at the top of the page right underneath the instructions, those are examples, study them. Anyway, the day ended on an excellent note, so I shall not complain.

Morning! Well, yesterday's new routine went fairly well. Surprisingly well since it was new, which makes me wonder what's in store for today? We can't have a new thing going on without some kind of glitch, can we?

More of the same today. Fingers crossed. Need to figure out a better way to get the kids to check their list for independent work. Right now they have a list on their iPad but it's just in the list app that comes with the iPad and I don't really like it. Maybe I'll install HomeRoutines onto their iPads. Only I don't necessarily want them to have access to all my lists lol. Maybe paper on a clipboard would be bettter . . . or sprial notebook. I'm sure I have lots of those. I just don't want to be writing the same list over and over and over - it's all the same stuff, they just keep forgetting things. Or maybe it's "forgetting" things ;)

Our Tuesday:

Brick and mortar school classes for both kids today. Then dd has a therapy appointment, and I think right after that we're going to have to leave to meet up with dh and my parents for dinner. I can't figure out how to get time for homeschool classes in there, but I might at least make them each do a math page in the car. Oh and at some point I may need to meet up with my brother to collect a computer cord my dad left and brother's house, so I can return it along with the shoes dad left at my house. (I think maybe my dad is getting "older.") AndI am darn well going to get a bath today and do a load of laundry. It's going to happen.

Tawlas - I use Wunderlist on my tablet.  It allows me to share lists with others, so that might be something to look into for the ipad.

No school today.  DD is still running a bit of fever.  DH thinks it's the GI bug that has been going around.  I'm not feeling too hot today either.  I slept in til noon.  I'm hoping mine is just the allergy yuck that is hanging around with the rain we are supposed to get over the week.

I'm giving up on formal lesson planning for science and history.  I've got huge banks of internet links and I think I'll just schedule 20 minutes each to go through websites and read/discuss things.  If we come across an activity she likes we can write it down and schedule it for Friday or Saturday afternoons.  If she wants to spend more time on it, she can get a library book.

And the good news....we are getting our new patio poured today.  I can't wait to have a shaded and screened in patio that I can watch the kids play from.....and not have to go around the house to get there.

Done for the day. We actually finished about an hour ahead of time so I wondered what I'd forgotten, concluded that I'd missed grammar, then I remembered that Latin translation reviewed every complement we've learned so far and forced us to parse every sentence. I love Latin. It covers a multitude of sins.

I finished my cleaning, the dogs are getting dinner early so we can walk them in between rain showers, the chicken house is tidy, the food is all cooked, the kitchen clean and it is not yet four. Good for me! I think I'll go grab my history and get some reading done, then write for a while.

Critter-yay!! Job well done!!

We finished early today as well, we did not do everything on the list, but we we the big ones done. I received Ds' Strayor-Upton math book in the mail today, we got book 2 and I'm thinking of going ahead and getting book 1 and maybe working through that first. There is definitely a lot packed into those little books and I think we are going to enjoy it at least I hope we are.

Critter -- yay!

Stefanie -- I can't tell you how jealous I am of the screened in patio.

Angels -- good for you for finishing early! That's always a good feeling.

We got through school classes fine, and we like the new therapist a LOT better than the last one. But everyone was a little stressed out, and I knew the evening plans would only make that worse, so I ditched math for the day and made sure we got an extra early start on the drive up to the city for dinner with dh and my parents. It turned out to be a good thing, too, because traffic and weather were both dreadful. At lunch time today it was 75 degrees and sunshiny. Right now it's about 35 degrees and snowing. In between, the cold front moved in with 65 mph wind that kicked up so much dust it made this weird, ominous haze. When it started to rain, the rain was almost like a thin mud, and the wind was blowing so hard it dried almost as soon as it hit the windshield and left a spotty film that made it hard to see, so even though it was raining I kept having to squirt washer fluid on the window to clear it. Very strange. But most of the dirt was out of the air by the time we arrived at the restaurant, and it had started to snow. We had a lovely dinner, and by the time we drove home the rush hour traffic had thinned out and the wind had died down a lot, so it was just a matter of driving in the snow in the dark. Adventures. :) But I did get that bath and load of laundry done.

Deep breath, and diving into tomorrow.

Amy, that storm sounds crazy! Glad it wasn't too hard to drive in at least. Good luck today!

School as per our new normal this morning. The neighbour's boy comes by on Wednesday mornings to play with my Ker too, so that will be fun for them. After lunch I'm taking DS8 to Chess Club. I'll do the grocery shopping and a library run during that time as well.

My van was written off :( Right now we have two vehicles (one of them a commercial truck) and neither of them can fit our whole family in them. So something needs to be done asap - just not sure where the money is going to come from at this point. There's some hope on the horizon, but we need to wait a bit to see if it transpires lol. In the meantime we do some body shuffling to make some of the in-town extras (which is an hour+ away) like piano and swimming work!

I'm trying to get up the motivation to get moving this morning.  I'm SO not a morning person.  Its 8:30, both kids are still asleep.  The toddler has his classes this morning at 9.  DD has hers at co-op at 11, we'll see how she is feeling since she was a whiny mess last night.  Tonight is not going to be fun.......it's going to be the "we're perfect parents" parade with the toddler's parents, so with DD having been sick, I'm a bit behind on the cleaning and need to clean, that is the biggest priority for today.  On top of that, one of the other grandparents broke the toddler when he was there for a visit last weekend (gave him a decent staph infection on his butt by messing with a benign spot).  I'm just not very inclined right now to get the kids up and moving...

And DH is off with adult stepson #2 for psych testing today and as soon as he gets back he'll have to head to work for the night.  A bit nervous for what those tests will bring back.  I've really got to get DD in for testing.....

Must get done today:

O School
O Refill prescriptions
O buy milk and groceries for whatever ds wants for his birthday meals on Saturday
O email a woman about writing symposium stuff (the job description for this volunteer position suffers from scope creep, and I'm not happy about it...sigh)

Want to also get done:

O Print patterns for next 3 rows of Dear Jane quilt squares
O write 1000 words either in blog posts or in new novel that I *think* I now have done enough prewriting work on to get started with.

MamaSheep-so glad you all got home safely!

Tawlas-sorry to hear about the bad news on your van. I hope everything works out and you get a great replacement vehicle.

Sdel-I hope your day went better than you feared. I hope everyone is feeling better at your house now, and that the rain washes some of the pollen out of the air for you. My truck is yellow with oak pollen right now.

We didn't have any school yesterday, so today could be fun. We're all tired this morning, but hopefully we can get through a decent amount of work and then visit the library this afternoon. I'm so sleepy, in spite of a good night's sleep, that I could go back to bed right now and sleep another two hours. I'm hoping the caffeine kicks in pretty soon!

Good morning! Stefanie, really hope your day goes better than expected.

Easy day for us as it's our town day. We've just finished off the read aloud I need to return today, the kids are doing some chores. DSD8 will finish her novel she needs to return, then we'll do an hour or so of history before we go. I'm actually going to be staying home, my partner is bringing the kids to town for piano and swimming lessons. Looking forward to a peaceful afternoon - although I'll have the toddler. Hopefully she naps well! I have a to do list that I'll feel very satisfied having accomplished :)

DS5 leaves for a week to visit my mom too!

Thanks everyone....wish I could say it did.  I'm even further on alert actually.  After the threat of rain since Monday, it has finally started raining.  Miraculously, I've only sneezed a handful of times so far, and very minor drips around the sneezing.

With the baby....well, the bio units are in heavy game play mode right now.  We really expect a big fight brewing with them over his birthday coming up.  They've been on supervised visitation for a year (with good reason), and he's lived with us for almost 2 years now.  We got a text from the maternal grandparents that they wanted the kid, but they wanted the bio units to bring them, they didn't want to have to drive.  We've dealt with that, but my concern is that since they obviously went into this attempting to play a game, what game are they going to play now on the back end....

But, moving on....school went better than expected today after being sick.  Swimming was a fight, again.  I can appreciate it is hard physically for her, but she has to learn, and it'll get easier with practice.  Math was a bit of a hair puller....she knew what she was supposed to be doing, she was just "bored" with it and playing games.  Grammar went swimmingly.  And I think my child has been conning me all along on writing and narration.  NO REPEAT reading of the selection.  Two perfect lessons on narration in a row.  I was so happy with her narration that I let her skip spelling.

Right now, I'm enjoying a beautiful sunset off the rain.  Our back deck faces due west and the sun is low, partially covered in haze and making everything golden looking, and then off to the east the dark storm clouds are just coming overhead.  It's gorgeous.......and I'm enjoying it.

Good morning. Another full day here. Later this afternoon we'll all go to town - the kids can try out the swimming pool and my partner, the toddler and I will wander around looking at new-to-us vans. I feel like I've been go-go-go all week, but really, yesterday, my biggest accomplishment was picking three big clay balls off a chickens toes :P Never done that before, after owning chickens my whole life too! Still, feeling worn out and ready for Sunday to arrive.

thanks :) We'll get another used vehicle - another minivan. There are seven of us altogether, so anything smaller just doesn't work. My partner has a vehicle that seats five and it's a real pain right now trying to balance bodies for any trip any where! There were several prospects worth considering, all dodge caravans, which we've found very reliable and long-lived. So we'll make an appointment another day and do some test driving.

We school on Saturdays to make our Thursday town day less stressful, but with my 5yo at my mom's for the next week, it feels like school-lite lol. Math and LA for both olders, some group work including a French review. I'd really rather being something else! It's sunny out and I'd like to get my garden started. Maybe we'll skip science (which takes like 10 minutes lol). At least there's no spelling today, both kids did their step 12 test yesterday (another 10 minutes).

So, yesterday we did no formal lessons, I had a teacher in-service day. I listened to a couple of podcasts and read several really good articles, taking notes. I will probably continue today, listening as I clean and get laundry done. I don't think I'm burnt out, just really frustrated that things are not going the way I planned. I really need to learn to not count on things going as planned because they never do.

I am flat wore out! Had an extra day of work this week, yesterday and today were hectic and tiring, both physically and emotionally. The DH is taking us out to eat. :001_wub: Love that man!

After that, I'll probably read for a while or watch one of the documentaries I brought home from the library run today. I think we will take up another plot next week, but I don't quite know which one, Rivalry or the Riddle plot. I have stories for both. I'm on target to finish out the first half of Twenty Master Plots by the middle of May. That will be a good place to take a break and tackle CW Poetry for the summer term. I think I actually have everything set for the Summer Schedule, which would be a first. I've a mind to do a little Human Bio for Science, and I just may pick up some Events from Ancient history to study. The boys were fascinated with Thermopylae, Spartan Culture and such. I might spend some time with Pompeii, maybe go back and pick up some things about Egypt, and I'd like to spend a little time on the Great Wall of China. I'll just pick up library books and documentaries for those. That will be something nice to do on hot, summer afternoons.

Yay, for not having to cook dinner!!!  I think we're just doing sandwiches tonigh as most of the family is gone.  My youngest and I listened to the first few chapters of The Green Ember for free online, he loved it and wants to buy the audiobook.  I'll probably pick that up next week and we'll finish listening to it, we did a lesson in phonics and we're calling it good.  I think I have our summer stuff all picked out as well, it's mostly going to be math, reading, handwriting, latin review and some documentaries about the Middle Ages.  Ladies, I would love to hear your thoughts on what to do with my rising 2nd grader.  We've been doing AO yr.1 this year and have been enjoying it for the most part and I was thinking of just moving on to yr. 2, but I remembered that we have MFW Adventures on hand and i'd love to do that with him before he gets to old for it.  So, i've been thinking of just MFW Adventures for his 2nd grade year and going back to AO yr.2 for 3rd grade, what say you?
