NikiSC
I've been hanging out reading nearly every post on dyslexia. You gals and guys are an amazing wealth of resources. Just, wow! I've been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out DS (12). I thought he was rebelling or lazy or having a terrible bout of puberty but all signs are pointing towards dyslexia. When I've read your stories or links provided, I'm like, "Wow! How did they know that ?" So here's our story... DS is a great kid. Seriously. We have DEEP convos yet he can't spell to save his life. He still counts on his fingers to add/subtract even though he *sometimes* knows his facts. Multiplication facts? He can't consistently recall those either. He subtracts multi digit problems from the bottom up. He still can't remember months, phone numbers, or addresses. And chores or following directions?!? Oh my. Not without explicit, repeated instructions. So based on everything I've read, I've scheduled an appointment with a VT dr through covd, set up an appointment with the family physician, and we started Barton today! thank you guys for candidly sharing your stories & struggles. I've been waiting on that magic moment when he'll snap out of "being a boy." I don't think that advice applies to him & he & I are ready to move forward😊.
OneStepAtATime
Hi! Welcome! Sounds like you have some plans in place and I know that can be a relief. Kudos for seeking more answers. I do have a couple of questions. I hope you don't mind. Did you give him the Barton pre-screening? Please, please do that first if you haven't done that. If he can't pass the pre-screening then Barton may not work well at all until other remediation has been done. Have you considered getting an evaluation through a Neurpsychologist? There are a lot of things that could be going on. Just targeting one area may not net the results you are hoping for if there are other areas of weakness, too. Does that make sense? Glad you are feeling good about the path you are taking. I don't want to be a Debbie Downer. I just wanted to ask some questions based on past experiences in my own situation as well as other posters on this board. Good luck and best wishes, NikiSC!

I absolutely don't mind😊. We did the pre-screening and he did better than I expected. I'm waiting for a return call from the NP. Im pretty sure it will take several months. Honestly, I'm pretty sure there's more going on like dysgraphia. It's all quite perplexing. When I watched the Barton training I nearly skipped the part about dealing with ADHD students. Would you believe that as soon as he sat down with those tiles he acted exactly like the scenario on the video?! I had to give him a ball to fidget with & move the tiles away from him. It kind of blew my mind. Anyways, I'm totally trying to absorb all the wisdom& suggestions☺ï¸.
OneStepAtATime
Good luck! Glad he did well on the screening. I hope the np calls soon. Best wishes! If you ever have questions about Barton feel free to ask. Lots here have used that program. It has worked very well for many (though not all).
